Legality question

For future reference, what is the legality of making a map using Crusader sides? That is, set in medieval times, with the knights of Europe vs. the Moslems of the Dar al'Islam. I remember that old Medieval Project thread (though it seems to have been deleted), during which one of the admins said it was all right to create something like that as long as there weren't any Hobbits/magic/Elves/similar. Opinions change, though. Is this still the case?

A generic mod or a mod based on real life events (such as World War 2) is fine. What we try to steer clear of are any mods that are based on some sort of specific fictional property, like The Lord Of The Rings, Halo, Resident Evil, etc.

It is not still the case, we had a discussion on this and the general feel is that we can be more lenient. As long as you're using non-commercially-produced assets with the appropriate permissions, you can make whatever you want. Of course if an IP-holder gets after you or us in the slightest because you used SuperHobbits™ (or whatever) in your mod, we'll shut you down, as our deference is always going to be to the owner of the original IP.

What you're describing is not a problem.

If you're not sure, it is best to do what Teancum describes above and just steer clear of established IPs.

Ah, thanks, that's good to hear. This can be locked, then, should you wish it.

If your doing crusades I still have all those Medieval Project models I made, including a number of Templar themed player models.

Wait. What about my Terminator map? Is that illegal!? Please tell me it isn't...

no, you are not making any profit from it, so it is legal.

 That never makes something legal. Ever. This is a myth.

Nate, your map is neither illegal nor is it against the rules. As Tean said, it is always best to stay away from other IPs, because it is sensitive territory. While your map uses a pre-established IP, it doesn't infringe on anyone else's work and it is doubtful you will get a C&D from any parties related to the "Terminator" franchise.

Yep - pretty much like Mav said. To clarify on the Lord Of The Rings issue, the crusades/midieval mod had discussion about wizards, magic, etc. LotR: Conquest had literally just come out. We advised them to drop the ideas -- we didn't want to be viewed as competition with a commercial game.
