Select the race (Side) you edited (mine was rep) from the Sides drop down menu and leave the Common box ticked then Munge!
Notes:
You can get the race from the assets\sides folder!
The textures are in the msh folder of your copied side folder.
See BF2 Jedi Creation.doc in \BF2_ModTools\documentation for more info.
If you want to create a Side with a new name see THIS topic.
If you get any munge log errors after munging then you must fix them before testing your map
Original tutorial:
Hidden/Spoiler:
ok...
Create a new map, copy the race you want to edit (example: republic) into the sides folder of the new map. Now go to assets/shell and copy all of the folders in it, but not the .req, then paste it in the _Build/shell folder in the newmap you created. Now Copy the “Common” folder from within the mod-tool “assets/sides” directory and place it in the sides folder of your new map, edit the texture, now, go into common > script > newmapname and open the LUA file named newmapnamec_con.lua (for me that was BS1c_con.lua ). Now if you look down the LUA file you will see ReadDataFile("SIDE\\rep.lvl", change this to ReadDataFile("dc:SIDE\\rep.lvl , then copy 2 .bat files in the side you got, these are: clean.bat and munge.bat , these can be aquired from the _BUILD >
Sides > ALL in the newmap you created, paste these into the side folder you are modifing. Finally we munge the your new map (see Jedi Creation doc for more info) we select the new race in the drop down menu on the left, and select the race you edited (mine was rep) you alos have to tick the "common" check box, then munge!
P.S: You can get the race from the assets > sides folder !
P. P.S: The textures are in the msh of your copied side folder.

It seemed to work for me, but there does seem to be a large margin for error, I will see what the problem is and address it, perhaps I have missed something out, keep trying and try reading all the threads on editing troops in this forum.

i followed every thing in this guide to making a skin but theres only one problem.
i put my clone commander skins (commander and cape) into my rep side this deleted the ones in there and put mine in there.
by the way heres I pasted my skins C:\BF2_ModTools\data_RT1\Sides\rep\msh
then i munged my map ( I i put rep as the side) and it finished and said go play bf2 but i noticed this note pad thing saying 2 errors about my skins
i started up the game and found my commander skin is now black (yes i did get the points to get it)
do you know whats going on???
please help!!!

i have the exact same error!!! what editing software do you use. i use jasc paint shop pro
I'm getting this one too with both Paint Shop Pro and GIMP... dunno what's going on
Okay, I figured it out. I opened a skin file, threw some paint on it, saved it as a GIMP file, closed the program, then reopened and saved as a .tga (with a new name).
The I renamed it rep_inf_ep3trooper and put it in a map. Probably more complicated than necessary, but if it works...
EDIT: Okay, also woks with .jpg... in Paint Shop (or whatever) I would save in the native format [i.e Paint Shop Pro (.psp)] so you can go back and edit layers, etc.
ueber ugly trooper 2: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v303/ ... t_0014.jpg
Kinda looks like something I colored when I was 3...
Now I can reskin the rebel pilot helmets
