Mesh Importer

Well MeshEx takes too much thought and time, so I decided to get warmed up by looking at mesh import. I'm more than 50% done, in fact, almost all the way done.
What you can do with it so far:
To do:
-Skip over collision, shadow volumes, and other "junk". Seems simple but will require the writing of an entire new iteration when searching. This makes it incompatible with XSI and a PAIN with gmax, so I will not release it. I mean there's like two separate polys with verts welded together o.O
There may even be some concerns about pirating content as well, all the better to just wait and see what people think. I just don't like the fact that this may get into the wrong hands

Wise concerns. Just remember, most things created are misused. Your app would be very useful for those wanting to recover their own files or learn how someone did something. But it could also be used to for pirating others work. But it was the same with bconstructor (was that the name? Been so long.) or the exporter plugins for xsi. People could (and some did) take other games' or people's models, inserted them into SWBF, and claimed it their own. As long as your intentions are to forward modding, then that's ok. You could always add an EULA stating that it is for creative purposes only and not for pirating other people's material and that you are not responsible for that type of misuse.
Looks good though.

Now I forgot, this program is going to convert what format into msh?

Mesh Importer
It converts .msh to .obj with UV's intact.
MeshEx is still less than half-done.

Aha, I knew that.
Oh I get it, a MshImporter and a MshExporter, I'm slow catching on to these things.

I would have it to where you can show/hide the "needed" junk like collision and such. Are you also going to have it play the animations and show the bone structures? despite the several tutorials about animating and the bones here, some would probably benefit more actually seeing how they are set up and how they work. They could then use it as a mesh viewer to create their own vehicles and character models if they are having trouble understanding the written way.

I'm just a kid

Don't expect too many amenities!
I'm writing a command line converter that will just do the basics. But yes, I'll try and separate the collision and whatnot. Right now I'm devoting all my time to MeshEx instead (I need to get crackin).

wow looks great.
to add to ShadowHawks idea of the EULA, that seems to be a great idea for a lot of projects yet no1 ever seems to make them... superb idea!
this will be amazing if you can get the bones converted aswell! but we all know that takes a lot and a lot of time and it may not even work... anyhu great work so far and i will be looking forward to seeing progress...

RepSharpshooter whats up with this program at the moment? o.O Are you still working on it? And what's with the exporter?
EDIT: Hope this is not a bump ( I think it isn't because this thread isn't already a full month old
)

He's spending most of his effort on MeshExporter, but once he's done I think he'll resume work on it.
I've got the beta version of it, and it works great just a bit a hassle to delete the collision geometry that gets imported as well.

I'd call that an alpha version, the one now seems to import the same triangles twice some times, it gets really annoying, to delete one of the two. I need to fix that, and get rid of the collision blah in order to at least have a beta.
Yes I really want a mesh exporter, that's why I have been working on it more.

Well, I've got XSI 5.1 so exporting is no problem for me
I just need the importer

Okay, the screenie you gave was a normal ep3 trooper with the arc "pack". Does this mean you can import different junks, if they're called like that, so you could also import vader's cape, dooku's/boba's cape and that kind of stuff? Or can you only import the complete thing?
Nevertheless, create work! If you get Meshimporter and MeshEx working, you would bring moddeling to a higher lvl! I also agree about your concerns (?), it's not good when people steel other's work (if i can say it like that)

Gmax has a nifty thing called element select, it selects all the triangles that are connected together, which allows me to remove the collision and shadowvolume with one click. If someone knows if XSI has this, give a shout.

It's called "Polygon Island" in XSI, its located in the"Select" options.
When the "Polygon Island" select option is enabled you can simply click 1 polygon to select all connected polygons.
You should have mentioned what "element select" was in your "Max or XSI" thread so the non Max users could give you the XSI equivalent.

Polygon islands, weird, never would have guessed, thanks. Then I guess using said islands, one would be able to get rid of the junk.
So I can release the beta, as long as it's ok with the admins, and won't present any issues.

Would anyone like a beta? If not I'll just keep it and try and refine more things.
...
Seems like not a lot of people are wanting this, but then again I may be wrong.
