Is it possible to edit downloaded maps with the modtools?

Is it possible to edit mod maps that you download from filefront with the modtools? Right now, I can only munge stock maps that came with the game, now I want to edit maps that I download from filefront.

The only thing you can do is hex edit mission.lvl to have different units, if you know what you're doing.

This is like seriosly wrong, not the info, the premise, editing someone elses map, without there permission, that VERY wrong

, the farthest i go, is to add a pseudo side/era mod to a prexisting map, as almost everyones conquest layer is ???_conquest.
