Opening Up your Keyboard.

Post by EGG_GUTS »

Is there a way of doing it without wrecking it? Cuz I got little siblings and they got some keys really messed. (I.E 4 and p) p sticks and 4 is almost impossible to push down.

Thanks

Haha, my friend's keyboard is like that. His main ENTER key is stuck down, so he always has to use the one waaay to the right. It's all like "I don't think I can reach it".
Oh, and at school, the library card catalogue is a computer, and the keys can be switched around on the keyboard, so it's funny to do that.

Yeah. I'll stop hijacking this topic now

Well I don´t know about your keyboard but on most of them you can take each key out individually by pulling it or pushing it from the side. Need to be carefull not to overdo it and break anything though.

Yeah, you just need a thin screw driver, stick it down between the keys, and then lever up under the edge of one.

Ok, before you look at me like I'm a retard, I read this in a Maximum PC magazine, and have tried it myself, so I know it works..

Another thing you can do provided the keyboard isn't something fancy like a Logitech G15 is put it in the dishwasher - KEYS DOWN on the TOP rack. Make sure you shut off the heat (unless you like your keyboard all melty), let the keyboard run through the short cycle, with a SMALL amount of dishwasher detergent, and make sure it doesn't run through a dry cycle. When it's done, pull it out, shake it really well, then let it sit KEYS DOWN on some paper towels for a couple of days.

This really works, and works quite well. Just make sure you don't have any heat on, and you should be ok. Also, I wouldn't do this with a keyboard that has USB ports integrated into it (some have USB ports on the back to plug in mice etc...)

As long as you don't put it in a FULL dishwasher with dirty dishes, this should work just fine... Also, make sure you shake it and let it air dry for a minimum of 2 days - good as new.. I've done this a few times with my keyboard, and have never had a problem.. It also saves you the hassle of prying keys off, only to have them break. The dishwasher really cleans between the keys, and your keyboard LOOKS new, and generally has a very good feel to it (just like new) afterwards.. I have never had any problems with keys repeating or being stuck, or not responding.

I've been around - just observing tho'.. And I took a vacation from work for a few weeks. When I got back home my computer promptly died, and it took me a few days to recover my windows install...

I'm always here - I just don't always have something worth contributing..

I wouldn't try the screw driver unless you are sure they keys are designed to come off. Many are not. Do not attempt to pop off any large keys like the space bar, it will break unless you know exactly how its held up.

There is almost no problem taking the keyboard apart, you just have to make sure you don't lose any parts. I've done it a few times on different keyboards. Some take a while to put back together if you weren't carelessly ripping it apart. Keep the two plastic sheets together.

When that happened to the keyboards at my school and stuff got stuck in them, my computer teacher just stuck the keyboard in the shower and just held it there for a minute or so. Should work like the diswasher thing except faster :D

You COULD do that I suppose, although the dishwasher is used to actually clean the keyboard, and it does a fine job of getting between each and every key, not to mention the nice sheen that your keyboard displays once it is dry. Hey - think of it this way. You can have a large greasy meal, and when you're done just rinse the plates off and put them back on the shelf - OR - you could use soap and water, and ensure that the plate is actually ready for use again, and any bacteria, grease, etc is completely removed... I ask you, which of these sounds more appealing? The rinse option is faster, but the results won't be what you're looking for.
