Blending between two textures

Lets say I have a rock texture and a grass texture, and I want my model to have a rocky side with a grassy top.

Is it possible to get a smooth blend between textures? Instead of a sharp edge that assigning individual polys to the texture would do? I'd rather not make a transition texture in GIMP for this.

Something similar to what (I believe) this guy is doing with 3Ds Max: https://youtu.be/X4zjkvxUQnY?t=3m13s He paints on to the rock texture where he wants the sand to be.

Thanks.

I'm using softimage by the way.

Technically, yes, you could do this via some basic arithmetic operations in a material's render tree, but you wouldn't be able to export it in SWBF2.

In short, no. You're going to have to do it in GIMP/Photoshop, which shouldn't be a problem as long as you keep the XCF/PSD file.

Have a look at this 4 part series if you want to blend textures in XSI:

You can find those videos with slightly better quality if you download them from here:

Would I be able to "bake on" the texture with Ultimapper or something?

Yeah you can bake whatever you make into a texture.
