I just got my sister's laptop, and when I try to open a zip file, I get a popup that says "cannot create [file] Access is denied."

Are you an admin? Try opening it with admin priveliges, although i've never had an issue with privileges myself. Also, it might be worth changing to 7-zip as its free, more powerful, and really easy to use.
