Need help with GIMP

i have another problem. I just downloaded the GIMP program and i opened up a texture and all I saw was a few details and a checkerboard.
What am i doing wrong? Some textures(such as Palpatine) worked fine but the TIE pilot was a checker board. I really would aprreciate some help...

Yeh, it's weird with some textures. But I know how to fix this.
Take a
''chessboard''-.TGA-file (For example, the imperial pilot) into the
TGA to JPG Converter, open up
Micro
Soft Paint and... It's fixed.

or, download a free image viewer, example, Ifranview and copy the tga from it into the gimp and then you can work on the texture there

Is it possible that what you're seeing is because some textures have an alpha channel?
