Okay so I'm definitely one of these really irritating newbies who has no idea what on Earth I'm doing but I'll try and keep this as clear and concise as possible:
-I'm using Windows 8, a digital copy of BF2 with patch 1.1 and the 1.3 unofficial patch and have downloaded the 'No DVD' modified version of mod tools.
-I have downloaded the vista/7 munge fix, saved it in (C:)/BF2_ModTools and ran the 'vistamungefix.bat'. This DID fix earlier issues I was having (such as the munge finishing almost instantly and causing the game to crash before even reaching the the main menu).
-Since then I have tried literally using the default map (Flat, square Yavin terrain with box-shaped CP positioning), making no changes to make sure it's not just me messing up anything during editing.
-After no success I uninstalled then re-installed EVERYTHING BF2-related, ran the munge fix and attempted to create the aforementioned default map.
-I continue to have the same problem, which is: everything works fine, my map shows up in the instant action menu with the correct name and description. When I load it, it looks as though it is about to start and then crashes to desktop every time.
-I have searched extensively to find a solution before posting, I have found many similar issues across the internet that have been resolved, but none exactly the same. I am aware that some people have got this working on Windows 8.
The only thing I can find in the munge output box which appears to be an describing an issue is the following:

please try running the map with the modtoolsnodvd.exe. then post the content of the bfront2.log that is created in the gamedata folder here.

Update: I discovered that this error was even happening with shipped BF2 maps, I must have really messed something up. After doing a fresh install AGAIN and trying to create the same blank map it actually worked; I managed to get the game running all shipped maps and the hellish square of Yavin grass!
I'll be extra careful not to mess anything up from here and hopefully I'll have no more issues.
