I place a barrier in the ZE... ban the units i want to not be able to pass throught it... but they still pass the barrier in game I have no idea what I'm doing wrong... any suggestions?

It sounds like you're unbanning units? By default, all the unit types are banned for barriers. Clicking a type un-bans that type. Yellow= banned.
