Lase's look into Vista...

Post by swbf_lase »

Well, I decided to move back to windows xp. So heres my review on what I liked and didn't like about Micro$of7 Windowz Vista.

What I liked

The only thing that I really liked about windows was the name. To be honest, I just thought Vista sounded cool!

What I didn't like

Here it goes...

I didn't like vista much at all. Flip-3D didn't work which was VERY disappointing. Voice recoqintion didn't work and neither did transparent windows.

Windows bluescreened like the second time I booted up which was also a sign of bad things.

Also, the internet didn't work! This REALLY pissed me off. So I open the network diagonstics tool and then it starts to look for the problem. It says try reconnecting and it gives me a link for it. It indictes after reconnecting that something is still wrong. So what does it do? It asks me if I would like to try to reconnect as that can sometimes be the problem. I almost fell unconunios from laughing. XD

Atleast I installed it on a different hard drive...

My final verdict: I'll try Vista again. When SP1 is released and people are saying good things about it. For now. It's all XP!

First I want to ask, after installing Vista on your computer, did you make sure all your drivers were working and installed properly? After most re-formats, either back to XP or into Vista, you have to re-install your drivers.

Second, how much RAM do you have? Vista recommends 1gb of RAM. That would be one reason you didn't have the visual effects. Also if you had Vista Home Basic or Vista Premium, you don't those special features. Not including the voice recognition.

I'm running on Windows Vista and Windows XP right now, dual boot, and I still use XP more than Vista. I use XP for all the gaming and Vista for everything else. Another recommendation would be to have 2gb if running Vista, because Vista tends to take up 512mb of RAM.

Although I do agree with you about waiting to get Vista when SP1 releases. And I would get Vista Ultimate if you want the whole deal. Vista came with my computer, so I didn't have to pay a whole ton extra for it. Otherwise, I'd probably be waiting like you.

You mean slightly transparent borders on your windows? Heres how if you still care at all. You right click on your desktop, click on personalize, then press theme and and choose windows arial. To change to make the taskbar and start menu transparent, do the same thing to reach personalization, then choose windows color and appearance then you choose how transparent it can be or what color it can be

I dont know about "activating vista" since my comp already had it installed

Oh, also if your power options are set lower, then those features will be disabled. As for the transparency feature, listen to Achronos-117.

According to your Xfire profile, your computer isn't anywhere near my recommended requirements for Vista. Your NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4800 SE video card is probably the reason you couldn't get Aero. I would upgrade the video card (or probably just the whole computer. :P) My personal recommendation would be this video card. It looks like a really good card (GeForce 7300 GTS) and has 512mb of memory, all for only $55. If you can afford Vista Ultimate, you can probably afford this card, and it really would be worth it.

Also, when I upgraded to Vista, my Internet didn't work either. If you're using a wireless card, it's probably the driver (it was for me). Check to see if it's compatible with Vista.

For $25 more, you could get a DX10 Compatible card, the GeForce 8500 GT 256MB PCIe.

Yeah you need a nVidia GeForce 5200 or higher for Aero to be used.

I went to bset buy just to look at pcs and the idiot misquoted us a $870 for $369 and it was supposed to be a scratch and dent open box item, he ended up giving us a new one from a box in storage for that price and it had Vista. It was the best purchase ive ever made. Vista works with everything I have loaded on the pc so far , even using no drivers or old xp drivers my wifi cards and games all run perfectly. I have seen only one issue at all over the past week of teting it all out, using limewire and clicking over 5 downloads at once causes limewire to bluescreen the pc. I hate restarted the pc due to limewire but when it loads back up the downloads are all there so ill just assume its a lame vista/drm/limewire issue.

Other then that Id say Vista rox the sox.

I have no problems installing and using iTunes with Vista. I just changed the compatibility of the installer to XP SP2 and it worked like a charm. :)

I don't even have to do that on Vista. Everything works for me on Vista. So you'll see no complaints here. :D

I used the Vista RC1 for 6 months, and basically the only complaint I have is the slow startup and sometimes incompatible games.
