How to add unit customization (in-game)

Okay heres another idea ive came up with. It would allow you to to able to customize your unit in-game... and I think its really cool!
Okay, first off you need to know how to script objectives some what, unlike me. Its basically a bunch of enter region then event happens junk.
Youd have a bunch of different regions, each with a gun model or something representing what weapon you get when you enter that region. So for example, thered be a rack of DC-15's with a region around it. And when youd enter said region that would set the WeaponSection1 of the unit youre playing to a DC-15.
This would really realistic too!
I just think this is so awesome! Maybe someone who can script could test it out or tell me if theres some kind of complication, shouldnt be that hard (and thats the beauty of it!)

Do you mean like in Jedi Academy you can Make your own jedi/sith then play as them? We can make the selection like: new jedi or new Clone Trooper.

Stupid gt was being slow when i was trying to post the idea... i guess hit the submit button to much. I deleted the other topics now
I hope zerted, Ace_Azzameen_5, maybe maveritchell or someone else who knows scripting sees this.

I'm going to try that!
Whats great is, with teleporters, you could spawn at a special armory place with no way out, then choose a place to "spawn" at by walking into the appropriate region.

ahem what? Ive never played JA (

), but youd spawn as trooper and then walk around to a certain place to choose which weapons you want to carry. You dont have some special screen where you toggle the weapons you want if that what you mean.
You could also adjust speed along with picking up the weapon with scripting, so if you picked up a rocket launcher you could adjust the units speed ti be slower too... if this idea works.

Whoa. This could make SWBF2 into a sort of RPG, it'd be cool. The awards system could even be harnessed.

I've been saying this is possible ever since a long time ago (back when the Mod Map Manager was in active development)

.
spawn at a special armory place with no way out, then choose a place to spawn
Argh, I've said that too

. But I used turret chairs to move people in/out of the area. We didn't know about teleporting then.
Theses ideas work excellent in SP, but I recently discovered that changing things like speed in MP makes everyone crash to their desktops. Somethings don't, like endurance or jet packs, which is what is holding me up on the next FakeConsole.

Well thats nice. Youd think someone would of incorperated it in a map by now though.
Could you have it so you could change your weapons any time you want? Or would you have to restart the entire level cause it would be like an objective? Cause, I was thinking each team would have a base with weapons with coresponding regions siting around and you could just go get change your equipment any time you want. I dont know if thats possable though...

You could have different weapons sitting in different parts of the map, Halo-style. Say, everyone starts with a pistol and has to go find the more interesting weapons.
Would be interesting to try--could even be incorporated into a campaign mode, methinks.

When I was testing it, I had weird issues. If I gave everyone a pistol and only a pistol, the game would crash. If they all had pistols and a few had other weapons too, it didn't crash. The different errors started to drive me crazy, so I moved on to other things. Looking back, the game might have been crashing because it didn't have the memory pools to display all the pistols at once. If that is the case, droppable/pick-upable would work fine. If not, you will get seemingly random crashes depending on the weapon layouts.
In theory, yes its easy to do. In practice, it may work flawlessly depending on the weapons you choose else you will go nowhere very quickly.
Edit: Hmm, maybe I needed to cycle through all weapons and give them to all the units at least once before the game loaded. Like how the Holocron mode's shield had to be setup. Maybe....

This is an awesome idea! Anyone who gets it working will have a killer map! I think that it would work best in a map like Bespin; Cloud City, with all the passages and skywalks, it'd make you travl around a bit to get things.

I thought I heard that a script like this will cause all fellow units of your class to take on the weapon change aswell.
Maybe thats something else.

More like in Lego Starwars2 the little character custumize thing.

well my idea was that youd have 9 units-
3-4 units that would be customizable, and 6-5 would be pre-made units that would be primaraly AI.

That alone will pretty much shoot this idea in the foot.
Unless its used in a campain/RPG/mission map.
