What breaks multiplayer compatibility?

When modifying sides, what breaks online multiplayer compatibility aside from modifying weapon attributes (fire rate, damage, ammo, adding custom weapons, etc.)?
In other words, what can't I do if I want my side mod to be compatible with online play?
