Have you got tips to noob?

Hello 
I have never tried moding swbf2. I want add dark trooper phase 3 to game. I have assets (.tga, .msh, .option). Where i should start?
I want make unit able to mele attacks, shoot rocket and use jetpack (attached in legs, I think it's simpler
I don't have to attach jetpack (I hope this is possible) ), use normal weapon and wrist rocket.

Anyway how should I start, and where? I want add unit to existing side. This will be my first try to mod
