Ha ha! I'm not a huge fan of rap, but I also don't hate it. I just don't listen to it. If someone puts it on I'm not going to bash their skull in.

Anyways...I'm fairly partial to Christian rock, punk rock, hard rock, a little bit of screamo and metal, and techno.

Here are some of my favorite bands:

Abandon
The Afters
And Then There Were None
(amazing techno)
Blindside
Capital Lights
Children 18:3
The Classic Crime
(they come from my area so they pretty much have to win :P, woot!)
dcTalk
Falling Up
Family Force 5
Hawk Nelson
House of Heroes
Kids In the Way
Kutless
Mae
Manic Drive
Philmont
Pillar
Red
Relient K
Skillet
Switchfoot
This Beautiful Republic
Thousand Foot Krutch
TobyMac
30 Seconds to Mars

For all the people trashing rap. I don't think you quite understand what I mean by rap :? . Look at the lyrics I suggested (and find the songs on youtube or something), and listen to some of the artists I suggested. Many of you seem to think rap is talentless, but I disagree 100%. If you see what some of these artists write and how they vocalize, it is amazing. If you actually listen instead of jumping on the bandwagon... also explain why you hate the genre, after checking some of it out.

Some Artists:
Black Star (Mos Def & Talib Kweli)
Binary Star
Blackalicious
Blue Scholars
Cyne
Dilated Peoples
Gang Starr
Jurassic 5
MF Doom
Masta Ace
The Roots
Asheru
Last Emperor
Nas
...

and some samples...
'"Give me the fortune, keep the fame," said my man Louis
I agreed, know what he mean because we live the truest lie
I asked him why we follow the law of the bluest eye
He looked at me, he thought about it
Was like, "I'm clueless, why?"
The question was rhetorical, the answer is horrible
Our morals are out of place and got our lives full of sorrow
And so tomorrow comin later than usual
Waitin' on someone to pity us
While we findin beauty
in the hideous
They say money's
the root of all evil but I can't tell
YouknowhatImean, pesos, francs, yens
, cowrie shells, dollar bills
Or is it the mindstate that's ill?
Creating crime rates to fill the new prisons they build
Over money and religion there's more blood to spill
The wounds of slaves in cotton fields that never heal"

"Yo, I'm sure that everbody out listenin agree
That everything you see ain't really how it be
A lot of jokers out runnin in place, chasin the style
Be a lot goin on beneath the empty smile
Most cats in my area be lovin the hysteria
Synthesized surface conceals the interior
America, land of opportunity, mirages and camoflauges
More than usually -- speakin loudly, sayin nothin
You confusin me, you losin me
Your game is twisted, want me enlisted -- in your usary
Foolishly, most men join the ranks cluelessly
Buffoonishly accept the deception, believe the perception
Reflection rarely seen across the surface of the lookin glass
Walkin the street, wonderin who they be lookin past
Lookin gassed with them imported designer shades on
Stars shine bright, but the light -- rarely stays on
Same song, just remixed, different arrangement
Put you on a yacht but they won't call it a slaveship "

"Moving along my odyssey like blood through the artery
Navigate the treacherous and make it seem effortless
Let those who make the exodus seekin the North beacon
from beatin and hog-eatin, from punishment all season
from hands cracked and bleedin -- cotton thorns in your palms
It's for y'all that I sketch these songs, and it goes..
Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow
I fear no man, because faith is the arrow
My vocal chord travel worldwide to block narrow
We can blow with the ammo or go mano-a-mano
Kweli is you wit me? (Whattup whattup?) Let's make it happen
I *BURN* through your argument with action
My eyes stay fastened to tomorrow lookin for a brighter day
When y'all wanna leave y'all? Right away"

""Let the games begin!" Set it off, it's the fight of the century
KRS and Professor X would battle each other mentally
With rhymes, these two team captains waste no time
Charles Xavier tried to invade Kris Parker's mind
He shot a cerebral probe at Kris's mind, but he missed it
Professor X taken out by the Blastmaster's metaphysics "

After checking out some of the artists you mentioned, Some of then can actually write, but those who write well can't rap well. A good portion of those songs could be better with a guitar and drum backing them. My acronym still stands, especially with mainstream work.

I think that all those artist rap perfectly, much better than most mainstream artists. It took me a few listens to realize this because I was so used to hearing mainstream rap and the synthesized rap, and I used to think these underground artists did not sound good. But after really listening to them for a while, I really feel that they sound perfect. They have a certain depth that is hard to find, I feel, in any genre. I can't really go back to mainstream rap, because now, that just sounds bad.
I think the music fits, but many artists are backed up by guitar and drums on quite a few songs. For example, The Roots are a full live band. Part of Rapping is the MC and the DJ, so live instrumentation is kinda unique in the genre. But I would say that both work perfect when used properly.

I agree with you on the mainstream works, I have never defended them.

BTW Dalek awesome avatar. Pete Townshend is a great guitarist.

He has some of my favorite songs:
-Don't Get Fooled Again
-Magic Bus
-Overture
-I Don't Even Know Myself
-Pure And Easy
-Let My Love Open The Door
-And anything from what was going to be in the light-house project...

I never realized how expensive collecting all of Townshend's work would be (including The Who)
