An idea on suppression fire

As some know, the sight range of an AI targetting infantry is 64. However, the ability to target buildings and tanks can have a substantially larger range. In many cases this is fine, but I was wondering how useful you think it would be to create targets for suppressive fire.
The idea is to create a small or otherwise non-interfering building or tank that would be fired on from afar to simulate suppressing fire. The tank is probably more workable since you can control the targetted area (the buildings could keep coming back and lead to FF).
The largest problem I see off hand is that it may still lead to friendly fire and lead to slowed offensives. Also, its probably best limited to relatively large engagment maps (many AI) so that it has a higher degree of success.
The question is, how useful do you think this might actually be?
