Noob Q: How do I get tunnels going into hills or cliffs?

Post by jedimoose32 »

Seriously, is there a ZE tool or technique for this?
I think I've seen this before on the Korriban Labyrinth map. You spawn outside if you're the Republic, and you're surrounded by steep hills and in one of the hills is a tunnel. Just sitting there. And it leads to the rest of the map.
Does this have something to do with portals and sectors? I hate portals and sectors (don't ask why).
Now, when I'm placing certain objects (e.g.: hot_bldg_bunker) I notice that they can dig through the terrain and there is a wierd purple wire-frame box inside of them. Could this have something to do with it?

The purple boxes are terrain cutters. Some objects have them and they are the only way I believe to get through the terrain.

Well, not the only way... You can make an extremely steep hill then youj can walk into it and go through it.......

But that's kind of complicated and doesn't look as good.

Only way to make a tunnel in ZE is by placing a object with a terrain cutter geometry built in it, which will pierce a thin hole through the thin ground.

In fact thats the only way to do so period, really.

That terrain thing, would just have you fall underneath the map, even with a prop to catch you, you would look right through the terrain at the outside world, which is no good.

Yeah.
Um...so basically what I'm after is something like on the shipped Hoth map. Theres that bunker behind some trenches and it goes partway into the hill, and then there are tunnels networked under the hill. When I tried that (with all the Hoth stuff, nothing from other worlds) the hill came through the connector for the bunker, so it looked like there was a cave-in or something cause there was a heap of hill in the entrance.

EDIT: Oh okay I just realized that it was actually a geonosian spire prop that I was trying to cut into. I'll try with a hill. Hang in there...

It might be good if someone released an asset pack of cutter geometries without real shapes, just a curve in the ground that could be retextured to fit whatever it's on.

LOL
Yeah, that would be a nice luxury to have. Unfortunately, I'm not the one to do it (though I know that's not what you're hinting at). You could fit the modelling knowledge that I have onto a 1 kilobyte txt file :P .
