blender modeling help

I started modeling in Blender, yet when I have a reference picture in the background and edit the loop edges on the front view, the dimensions change on the right view point, for example in the front view i only want to change the dimensions for the x and y, yet the z dimension also changes, btw I use the s key to change the size, how can i change the size with out changing dimensions that are not seen in a certain view.
