What is the purpose of special ranks?

What exactly is the point of special ranks on this site? I understand what ranks are for, but I've seen offbeat ranks like "black sun slicer", "help me! I'm an idiot!", "filthy thief" or "surpreme galactic ruler". What do people do to get those (other being a filthy thief or an idiot), and what are they for?
