Selecting objects in space?

Yeah, I look around and did numerous searches & looked through the docs. Sorry If I missed it, but how do you select objects in space? I can only select ones I put in, but not ones already in.
How could I forget? I just needed to change it to ships. Thanks, OGEB1103!
