Polus: Hidden Cavern -- FINAL

Post by authraw »

Yes! That's right! You can read more about the map (and find screenshots) by checking its WIP page.

EDIT: Darth_Z13 made a short video to showcase the map! See it here!

Here's the download link:
http://files.filefront.com/Polus_Hidden ... einfo.html

Well, I figure it's about time to hang this map up and move on to the next one. I could do little tweaks to this forever and drive myself crazy, but I'm just gonna say it's done now (unless somebody finds some major bug or something.) Thanks to all who made this map possible (check the readme for their names) and enjoy the map! :D

RE: Polus: Hidden Cavern -- Public Beta! Voice Actors Accept

Sweet! I'm downloading.

Edit: I played it through. Very fun. But why does the Consortium have Rebel sounds? It doesn't seem right.

...[Censorz], I need to get a microphone!

I'd really love to help, but I can't. Who knows, maybe I'll get one this weekend (very unlikely).

Well, the alternative is to take out the sounds entirely-- do you think you would prefer that? I figure that the Consortium and Rebels are similar enough that I could use the same announcer.

But yeah, I could take out the Consortium announcers if everybody prefers it that way.

Yeah, those would be my custom voices. Hence the "voice actors accepted" part--if anyone could do a better job, I would be willing to hear it. ;)

Oh yeah, I've been waiting for this! I'll give an Edit after I download and played it :D

Edit: Amazing map!!! I have good fun playing it. I really like how the AI can take over the hero characters in the game. I can't really hear what the Mandalorians say...the voice is like being covered over. Assault mode rocks, and the Phase III Dark Trooper is incredible. Where in the world did you get that voice over for the phase III? I didn't really found any problems except the ice tunnel covering over certain things. Some Beta! I'll really be anticipating the full version :D

Really? Do you mean that the walls cover up the lightsabers and stuff, or that there are actual invisible walls here and there? Because there shouldn't be any invisible walls at all--I haven't used any.

I'm glad you like it! Yeah--the Mando voices seem to get covered up by the general battle sounds sometimes--I've tried raising the volume, but then it just sounds really loud and out-of-place. I think it's just that my voice doesn't stand out well enough (or maybe my microphone isn't good enough.)

Yeah, that Dark Trooper Phase III is really cool. That's all ]v['s doing--I just slowed the unit down a little, lowered its health (it had like, 5000 health or something, lol) and made it so it couldn't fly forever for gameplay balancing reasons. The sounds that he uses were actually some sounds found by ]v[ buried within the game itself. They were going to be used for an imperial guard (the red guys) but it doesn't look like the devs ever got around to making the unit. There are actually a lot of really cool sound files buried within the game itself that never made it into the final version (but the imperial guard the only new unit that I can seem to find.)

Yeah, don't expect many changes from here to the final. I'm throwing around the idea of giving the defilers some custom sounds, too, but since each unit that has custom sounds adds about 3MB to the download size (and since the custom voices are just so-so to begin with) I'm not sure if I really want to bother. We'll see.

Thanks for the support, all! :D

Where? I'm going to need screenshots, because there aren't any invisible walls for me.

What are your graphics settings?

I did not find any invisible walls

anyway, I downloaded last night. this is so awesome, the consortium somehow feels like they belong in the game. the way you set them up, they are pretty well balanced with the shipped imperials (+ the new dark trooper) while still remaining unique.

as far as the mandolorian sides, they are pretty cool. the sounds are not perfect, as they are muffled, but they don't sound bad. I like the quote where they say something about attack pattern alpha or something like that. maybe you should just add onto the mandolorian voices instead of replacing them. I mean, since every mandolorian is unique, it might fit better if there are 2 voices representing them instead of 1. I also thought it was great the way you renamed the units with mandolorian names. it just shows that you paid attention to detail

the only bugs I found was that on hero assault, the DN Bolt Caster makes the charging noise when the fire button is held down even though it isnt charging. maybe it should be replaced with the imperial arc caster.

anyways, this is a keeper in my addon. it was worth the wait.

Thanks for the comments! Yeah, it would be nice if there were at least two different Mando voices. Unfortunately, I'm only one person, and I'm not good enough to do two different Mando voices, so unless I get a good audition, one voice will just have to do. ;)

I was hoping that someone would notice the Mandalorian names! Those are all actual names from real Mandalorians (but they're all jumbled up, of course.)

I'll take a look at the arc caster and see what I can do. I believe it actually uses the exact same sound properties as the imperial variant does, so I'm not sure changing it would fix it. I'll look at it, though.

Do they? Well, they don't in EAW, and I'm trying to go with that a little more. Plus, the unit isn't really mine-- it's ]v['s, and I don't want to make too many changes to it. :) Good idea, though.

Wow. It's amazing the bugs that crop up when you test it on other machines! Do you have the mod tools? If so, would you mind running the BF2_modtools.exe and posting the log?
