FX Trouble (Unsolved!)

Well, I saw that TIE Shield effect in Mav's WIP. For a while before that, I was thinking about trying to give effects different geometries. Now that I've seen how it is in-game, I've decided I've just gotta have something like that for BrutalFront. I don't even care if it's a shield or not, the mere effect is awesome.
So now I run into Particle Editor problems. When I try to open some files, it crashes, for instance the sonic blaster effect. I moved the MUNGED folder into gamedata/data/lvlpc same as the application, but to no avail.
Other effects, like the droideka shield and the space trails, are empty when I open them. Nothing in them whatsoever. Why is that?
Finally, when I take an effect and give it the TIE Fighter's geometry as an experiment, it crashes. Why does that happen? Is it related to the sonic blaster problem?
