The whole point on this is a modeling contest though, not a texturing contest. With this in mind, the reason a texture should be included for the model is not so that it can super-enhance the model, but instead so that we can see the modeler knows how to properly UV and apply the correct looking texture.
Anyone that is good enough to out do a self-made texture with a photosourced texture (since they have to apply it correctly) is already good enough to create a great texture of their own most likely, so the talent is shown just the same.
If you still don't accept my arguments, I move to at least use the shipped BF1 and BF2 textures. They are by no means photosourced and have great potential to be edited themselves.

What's the plan about animations in this contest? Are we going to have any? I'd say no; as has been pointed out not too many people animate. Seems unfair that the few who do gain some extra points just cause they can.

...? You mean more skill shouldn't be rewarded with more points?

Animating's easy to get the hang of. I just need to figure out how to make animation type linear so that the objects don't bounce around when I don't have a key placed.

That's why I suggested the grading scale I did. No animation gets 0 points, a bad animation can get 1 or 2 extra points, etc.

I think it should be more like...
Model Quality (40)
Textures (20)
Model Efficiency (20)
Animations (20)
And if you can't create animations then just make something that doesn't need animations or something that would use existing animations (i.e. character models) and since you made something that doesn't require animations the points from that will be divided so that its like this...
Model Quality (40)
Textures (30)
Model Efficiency (30)
Animations (N/A)
This way you can have an animations category but if someone makes a variant of say a TIE fighter or something they get the above scoring since the model doesn't use animation. I know it may seem to confine it some but there's plenty of things that could be made and character models fall into this category as well. The only thing that really require unique animations are walkers and vehicles with s-foils or landing gear should at least have a simple animation. I think this scoring system could be far better since most here can mainly model but its gotta be more challenging than that, textures and efficiency need to be a little more important than 10 points.
@ Fluffy
To change the interpolation to linear just select all your bones and open the animation editor with 0(zero) and click and drag over the keys and lines showing the animation curves. Click on the curves menu at the top and find linear interpolation and click on it to change from spline to linear. Spline is still usable in the game but for certain more static animations like a ships wings you would use linear but a walk cycle would look much more fluid and realistic on spline.

Making animations isn't too hard; from what I've heard, the problem is exporting them.
Must they be exported to be graded?

making anims isnt too hard? 0.o
it depends on the anim how hard it is to do, vehicle anims are siomply but anims for units (beside idles) are extremely hard and cant be done with simply rotating and keyframing in my opinion/experience

I'm for that.

You just need to learn more about inverse kinematics and also how to create a rig around the unit skeleton that controls it using constraints rather than being in the hierarchy. I made one but I don't think it's 'legal' to release a modified unit template.

Oh, when I said making anims isn't too hard, I didn't mean stuff like unit anims. I meant stuff like a door.
