read the gettingstarted.doc in the documentation folder of the mostools
and try this tutorial: click me!
its for battlefront1 modtools, but it will work for the battlefron2 modtools too.
if you have more questions, please look into the everything you need topic before posting the questions.
you can find it on the top of the modding forum.

I think I know what your problem is, I was a little confused about that at first as well. The world appears black because when terrain is resized, the default texture is replaced with a black one. All you need to do is apply a new texture to the ground. As for object placement, that's all in the "Getting Started" document like DarthD.U.C.K. said.

Yes, click on the tutorial Darth D.U.C.K gave you and look in the "documentation" folder of your "BF2_ModTools" folder. To change it from black to color: Go to "Texture" and hit browse. And then paint your whole map the color you choose/browse. If you have any more questions:

A. Search Tutorial
B. Look in "documentation"
C. Find another French Modder

After you've done what Eggman did, just close out of zeroeditor and open it again.
And your new terrain should be there :)

Make sure your new scale is to the power of 2. 8x8, 16x16, 32x32, 64x64, 128x128, etc.
