What is Darkfall Online
A new Massive Multiplayer Online RolePlaying Game by Aventurine. It's currently in the beta stages, and clan testing and some private individual testing is going on.
What makes it any different from, say, World of Warcraft?
The developers have done so much to revolutionize the MMORPG gaming experience. The entire world is a Player Vs. Player zone. Combat is being done much like Mount&Blade was, with specific mouse movements performing different actions, and ranged attacks such as magic and archery are handled like a third-person shooter.
Skills are not "leveled up" as in traditional MMORPGs, but it's more... "real skill" oriented. Take for example fishing. The more you fish, the better your chances of catching something become, and the more equipment you can use. But you also have to, well... practice fishing. I'm not exactly sure of the details, as I'm not part of the beta, but from what I've gleaned from my reading, it's going to be much different from the same-old "click, level, click, fail, click" rinse and repeat routine.
All of the creatures and monsters in the game have been given AI to simulate instinctual activities. They usually form packs, can build camps, and will even change location if their present location is being attacked by players and/or other monsters. That being said, monsters also fight amongst themselves. This goes on even when players are not around.
I've also read that the developers are trying to keep the "instances" down. This could be a drawback and potentially cause lag and fighting over goods, but it should also help the in-game economy by making sure that higher leveled players can't just continually repeat that uber dungeon and get the same reward over and over again. It should also help to keep the game from becoming repetitive as fast, because no matter how many times you go to a certain place, there are always infinite possibilities of what could happen, depending on what monsters have relocated there and what other groups are there fighting for the same goods.
These are a few overviews of the game's revolutionary system

When is Darkfall expected to be released?
The makers are aiming for a late 2008 release, but haven't set an official date yet.
That's... about it. I for one am greatly looking forward to it, and hoping that the subscription (which I'm rather sure there will be one) is not too terribly high.
