18 gamemodes?!?

Post by Astute »

I'm currently working on a new port of an old swbf1 level I had built a long while back. I used a modeling tool to build the complete level from scratch(since I lost the assets for the old level a long time ago). I was running up the numbers and scaling everything the other day, when I realized... that the level itself is massive. I've been trying to figure out many different strategies to fix the problem of having an incredibly large map. Here are some of the ideas I could come up with.

1- One gamemode for each section of the map for each era, So a map this size would be about 2-4 sections, times 2 eras(CW and GCW), times the number of supported game types(going to go with CTF and conquest for now). This would amount to a greater amount of gamemodes including any new gamemodes I add after that like uber or hero deathmatch.

2- A tug of war gametype, where a number of spawns are scattered all over the map, and must be taken in a certain order in order to win. This would make a map much longer than a regular conquest, while not destroying the vitality of the map. Of course regular conquest would be available, but this would be a more practical gametype.

3- A resource match, where both sides have resource points independant of the spawn points(so resource points spread between spawns and not on top of them). The point of the gamematch would be to drain the enemy reinforcement count faster than they can regain points from the resources. Once again, same idea with tug of war, but I can utilize the whole map.(Side note, I wonder if you could have terminals that would allow players to spawn vehicles at the expense of the reinforcement count?)

4- The ability for the admin to choose which spawns are available, which is a bit extreme and probably not possible. This would be the most practical solution if it wasn't so difficult. If the admin could manage the spawn layout, then it would eliminate the need for all the unnecessary gamemodes.

Just curious to see what you guys think. Hopefully I'll have a practical solution by the time the level comes together in ZE. I also have other gamemodes I want to add besides these such as History mode(1 era) and Air combat(2 eras), but his problem is top priority right now.

Have you ever player UT2000? That game (I think) had a WW2 map where you stormed the beach and tried to blow up an artillery cannon. The defenders spawned in a room where they could walk into different portals and be teleported to different sections of the map. You could do the same thing. All you would need is two CPs, 1 for each team.

Yeah, it was UT 2000. I remember playing hours worth of those "assault" maps, where one team defended and one team assaulted.
