How do I highlight text in a [code] tag?

I've seen others do it and I've tried a bunch of different things with no success. My current understanding, based on the BBCode formatting guide, is that the code tag needs to be modified for php highlighting.

But I don't know what to do from there to actually highlight the code.

I don't personally know how to do it, but I do know that if you quote a post that has stuff highlighted in a
Code: Select all
tag, it should just straight up show you what they did to do it themselves.

There was something like that in the Feed back thread. But theire was a reason, why guru hadn't add syntax highlighting to the code tags. But i don't know the reason now. You need to have a look at the feedback thread.
