Super Smash Brothers "4"

As we now have some kind of details about the latest two installments in the Smash Brothers franchise, I feel it's time to start another thread. Hopefully, over the next two years, we reach the same amount of hype that the original thread created.

This thread can be bumped as long as there is new information, as most likely there won't be any for a while, then a lot, then a few sporadic Dojo posts.

Items from the most recent Iwata Asks:
Project Sora director Masahiro Sakurai discusses all things Smash Brothers during the latest segment of the popular Iwata Asks.

As I’m sure the majority of you are aware the game is coming to both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. A lot of questions about the game remain unanswered though, especially the way that the two games will interact with each other. Anyway, here’s some of Sakura’s thoughts and musings regarding the highly anticipated game.

-Internal talk about creating a new Smash Bros. first started a bit after the release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl on Wii in 2008.

-This was about the time Nintendo first asked Sakurai to make a 3DS game. Iwata realized that fans would want a new Smash Bros. for the 3DS, but he was unsure if it would be okay to ask Sakurai to make another Smash Bros. immediately following Brawl.

-When Iwata first mentioned the development of Wii U to Sakurai, it seems that Sakurai immediately realized that they’d need to make Smash Bros. for both platforms.

-Iwata had actually intended to ask him if he’d like to make the game for 3DS or for Wii U.

-Sakurai had actually begun thinking about what he’d do with the next Smash Bros. while he worked on Kid Icarus.

-He felt that it would be wrong to make a mere extension of Super Smash Bros. Melee (GameCube) and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. He did not feel that it would be right to just increase the volume, adding 50 characters or doubling the stages for instance.

-He also felt it would be wrong to just improve the visuals. This is why he felt that selecting to make the game for the console just because it would have greater performance would be wrong.

-Making a portable version had its appeal for him, as they’d be able to do a number of new things. At the same time, there would be limits, as they’d be handicapped in some areas when it comes to offering the usual enjoyment areas of Smash Bros.

-Specifically, Sakurai feels that a portable system makes the game a more “individual” experience in that, compared to a console, it’s easier to make players attached to the data that they’ve built up and collected. The fact that you’re carrying the hardware with you makes for a more personal experience.

-The difficulty here is that the current Smash Bros. games haven’t relied on rewards, collecting money or raising your character’s level. There’s no element of gaining experience to make your character stronger, Iwata noted.

-Adding the notion of experience would pose a dilmena, explained Sakurai, as there are some players who would get into such a game, while others would not like it. Iwata added that placing a focus on experience would also make the game lose its instant play quality.
What Sakurai hopes to do is have the 3DS version of Smash Bros. allow players to build up their character through battle and rewards, then take their custom character to the Wii U version to face off against everyone. He feels it could be nice if they can make the “personal” portable space and the stadium-like “public” console space mesh together.
Iwata summed it the basic idea nicely: players would spend time on the 3DS version, building up their character and collecting stuff, then show off their skills on the Wii U version.

-Sakurai noted that as the Wii U is an HD system, this version could offer 60 frames per second visuals, high quality graphics, dynamic effects, and smooth character movements.

-While it is important to have both versions of the game be enjoyable on their own, Sakurai feels that connectivity between the two versions will make the experience even more enjoyable.

-Closing off the little section offering vague hints about the new Smash Bros. games, Sakurai said that his aim with the 3DS version is to offer players a slightly
different experience from conventional Smash Bros. games. He believes that there is merit in having skilled and unskilled players play together, so one emphasis will be on elements of players helping one-another.
Hopefully the custom characters don't break it too much. I can't wait to read that sentence when I own both games some day. :P

I iz esited.

My cousin and I once talked about custom characters in Smash Bros.
The discussion seemed to settle on the best solution being a point-based stat system. Where you would have a pool of points and you had to choose whether you wanted to spend it on speed, power, special attacks, and the like. If there's a level-up system, though, that IS potentially game-breaking unless you have a multiplayer system that matches players level for level. It'll be interesting to see what they make of it (if they make it at all).

Hmmm...a level system added is something different and sounds great on the 3ds. I'm not sure how I feel about bringing that character onto the big screen with the WiiU. But in due time.

I am very excited about 3ds and WiiU versions working together some how.

I just hope that loads times are gone, faster gameplay, more items on screen, and no snow storm when it comes out. And returning characters. Especially the 3rd party.

There are so many good characters they could add to Smash, I just hope they do add more characters and don't remove any.

For 3rd Party:
Classic Megaman.
Seriously, this guy has had almost all of his games on a Nintendo console, why hasn't he been included yet? Plenty of options for moves as he gets about eight per game.
Hidden/Spoiler:
My personal moveset would be:
B: Mega Buster (MM4 version)
Side B: Metal Blades (MM2, They beat everything)
Up B: Jet Adapter (MM6) or Beat (Carries him like Snake's Up B)
Down B: Top Spin (MM3)
Dr. Robotnik/Eggman.
I hate it when Smash characters lack their respective villains, as when I was younger I would always simulate the final boss battles of the games they were from and when they weren't there they would just face Mewtwo or Ganondorf or something. Eggman would be driving his mech from SA2:B and would be a heavy class fighter. The mech might have to be redesigned to have arms or something, but I could see it working out very well. Much better than just having Eggman himself and becoming a Wario clone.

For Nintendo:
Count Bleck (Super Paper Mario)
I know, a relatively obscure character, but I feel he would be proper representation of a Paper Mario character (even though people hated Super for some reason). He already has a moveset from his boss fight and is scaled down to your size, unlike Super Dimentio and the Shadow Queen. I think I posted a moveset in the old thread and from what I remember it was still pretty good. :P

Giygas/Geigue/Gigu/Gyiyg/Nancy (Mother 1)
Again, obscure, especially in his Mother 1/Earthbound Zero form, but he would work so well. He could give Ness and Lucas somebody to fight instead of themselves or Lucas' [Spoiler] skin. It would be quite interesting to see the PK/PSI moves used by something much taller, and could even reinvent a few of them because of Giygas' power.
Hidden/Spoiler:
B: PK Thunder (more like Samus/Lucario/Mewtwo Charge Shot than the launch move)
Side B: PK Brainshock (Functions like Mewtwo's Disable/Down B)
Up B: PK Flash (Makes Giygas jump higher, if used while touching another player it causes the Jiggylpuff/Luigi effect)
Down B: PK Fire (Creates fire around Giygas that causes small damage)
Down A: PK Freeze (No Charge: Sends out two small non-moving icicles, one on each side. Charge: Sends out a row of two to three of those icicles on each side)

Final Smash: Temporarily becomes Mother 2 form and uses the incomprehensible attack (Giant Green off-wave that isn't as powerful as the Taboo one, but not as easy to dodge)
Zoroark (Pokemon Black and White)
Seeing as it's obviously the new Lucario, I hope that it's used and has a fresher moveset and isn't just another Mewtwo clone.
Hidden/Spoiler:
B: Foul Play (Randomly uses one of the other characters' B moves, like Kirby)
Side B: Shadow Claw (Moves across the screen quickly and slashes at the first opponent in sight. Trips if no one is there.)
Up B: Agility (Works like Pikachu's Quick Attack, but can only go in one direction. Has a longer range to compensate)
Down B: Night Daze (Charges, sends out a dark energy shock-wave that varies in range)

King K. Rool
The fact that he hasn't made it in yet is almost sad. I have no idea how he would work, but he deserves a place as he is the Kong's main villain.

Oh, and the Wii U version should totally be called Wii Smash U.

Oh man. I laughed at the name of Wii Smash U, but I don't think that's what they'll call it.

I've seen some names like kurfuffle, royale, fisticuffs.

As for characters. I want to see alot if not all of the previous characters return.

New ones I'd like to see are:

Gary with blastiose, arcanine, and nidoking. But we'll probably get a girl pkmn trainer with pokemon from gen 5.

Megaman: It's a no brainer.

I heard that Capcom has two people in so I'm hoping the second is Viewtiful Joe.

Travis Touchdown: He'd be so much fun.

Professor Layton: Layton himself tweeted something about doing to a brawling brothers tournament. He'd be a fun addition.

Ridley: Don't know how, but he should get in. Metriod needs another representative of the franchise.

Mother could use one too and F-zero. Of all the racers, I'm use Sakurai can think of some cool moves for a racer. For pikmin, I don't know. May just stay with Olimar. I can't think at the moment how different you can make Louie.

If Pikmin had another character it would probably be from Pikmin 3, seeing as Smash is usually used to advertise game releases (Roy in Melee, Lucas in Melee before Mother 3 got delayed, Ike in Brawl, Twilight Princess models in Brawl). At least that way they could give the new character the new mechanics.

Now that you say that. They do do that. Interesting. Well hopefully no snow storm when it comes out and no always there 1 second lag to "balance" things.
