It's a matter of opinion (like everything). I'm not that deep into the differences, but I think this topic will end up with several good arguments, from which you have to choose what best suits you. There is never a "real" best in a world where different people favor different stuff.

It is an easy choice, the only free long term version of XSI is Modtool 7.5
This doesn't allow you to use the Pandemic exporter though so you'd have to use mshex or similar.

There are 30 day trial full versions which do allow for export there is links in this forum to versions 4.2 5.0 5.1

The tutorials on the xsi website are pretty good as are the help files within the program.

sorry. i should have been more specific. i know about those tutorials but i was just wondering if there were any for 7.5 because it probably is slightly different, and any slight changes would be a bit hard for me, as a beginner, to understand.

XSI for the most part has not changed, if anything they have added things that a beginner wouldn't really be getting into anyway so any tutorials either here or on the XSI site would be perfectly suitable for modtool 7.5. So even if some one is talking version 5.11 foundation it is still valid for modtool

This is an excellent 7.5 video tutorial serie I found. (<-click)
It goes through the whole process of how to make a new character. (the link is also in the pop-up screen when you start 7.5, but it's still very good)
