Yeah I agree, They had Age of mythology, why not mythology total war? Actually there was a mythology total war mod for RTW in progress, but then it got canceled in favor of working on the M2TW version. Its probably in the TWC forums. (So many acronyms I know).
As for the Lord of the Rings, the mods are essentially games themselves, as they have custom battles and campaign maps. Fourth Age Total War even has historical maps and custom voices. Its essentially its own game. Heres the 4th Age TW center:
