New Moddata Base? TORRENT BASED
There was already the Idea of an New mod data base, because a lot of mods get lost and gamefront delete them after a few months. So here my Idea.
The complete size of all Maps is 31.25 GB
The Complete size of all Mods is 9.15 GB
So my Idea is to collect all mods and put them into packs
So lets Say 10 GB per pack.
And then we create a torrent file.
There are a lot of people that will seed them (Gametoast Members: Total members 2847)
I know not everyone is still online but i think it will make every mod /map avaible and no mod will be losts.
I think thats pretty do able isnt it?
So if enough people agrees with this plan please post a link of youre mod under this thread.

Re: New Moddata Base? TORRENT BASED
why you dont like torrents? I hate torrents if they are illegal but those torrents are usefull if you dont want to pay for server costs.
EDIT
Youre first map is removed link dead
Thats why i think its necessary

Re: New Moddata Base? TORRENT BASED
Lol. Of those 2847 members, about 5% are even remotely active (visiting the forums regularly). There are a lot of people that will seed them (Gametoast Members: Total members 2847)
Of that 5%, maybe 1% of those would be willing to seed at most. Very likely less.
Who would be hosting these files? How many of that 5% have 40 GB of data ready to be used for storing every map and mod ever made? How many that have that amount of free space, having a good enough internet to handle the loads?
Even taking into account that other people from other sites would be willing to help...
I'll give you a "too long, didn't read."
This wouldn't work. Sorry.

Why, exactly? Torrents are not illegal, contrary to popular belief, and they are actually Linux's top form of distribution as torrents are almost always loads faster than direct downloads, depending on the file of course; of course granted that they're without a doubt the most popular means of distributing pirated software, but that is neither here nor there. I just want to clear up any misconceptions that you or others may have about them.Noobasaurus wrote:I don't agree, but here are some links. I personally don't like torrents.

Are u agree to my plan Marth? And whats about he others? Before i start to seed this torrent i want to hear your opinion to this "project".
And the wulfman i'm not going to put them all in one torrent. Im going to put them in many Packs so that everyone only needs 5gb and thats just a USB stick which costs 99cents

The only problem I foresee with torrent based mod distribution is seeding, the life of the torrent depends on this. How many people are seeding and how long do they plan to seed?

This. Seeding will, quite frankly, be the quick death of this idea.AceMastermind wrote:The only problem I foresee with torrent based mod distribution is seeding, the life of the torrent depends on this. How many people are seeding and how long do they plan to seed?

Re: New Moddata Base? TORRENT BASED
I think this is the only way to have them all (as long as the comunity seeds) But i think its a solution for the next 3 years and then swbf2 will be dead. The dying of swbf2 is a work in progress which never stops until its dead (its easy to make examples: Yuke5 stops to make mods, manderek, and many others too). But i think until then it is a solution
I will start seed them soon (if i have my first map pack complete)
I hope no one institutes legal proceedings against me because i included his map (if thats do able
)
But if someone dont want his map / mods in one of my torrent packs please write it here. Everyone else agrees without agreement

SWBF2 will only really truly die if people continue to say it's dead and don't do anything to stop it from happening.

Re: New Moddata Base? TORRENT BASED
Not that I think you'll have many people unhappy with their maps being seeded, but as a general rule of thumb that's not the best stance to take vis a vis permissions.LEO wrote:But if someone dont want his map / mods in one of my torrent packs please write it here. Also, 3 years is a really random number. No data suggests it will or will not live that long.

Re: New Moddata Base? TORRENT BASED
We had people saying SWBFII would be dead within a year or two back in 2008, no game ever truly "dies". When they shut down the SWBFI servers there were still people playing online, and I think that's a testament to something (what that is, I'll let someone else decide).

Re: New Moddata Base? TORRENT BASED
Currently we have more people starting to mod than people who leave. Even if we have lost very skilled and experienced modders, the cicle will continue.

Re: New Moddata Base? TORRENT BASED
Ok I've heard enough arguments against this i'm not going to do that.
Is here someone from staff who can close this? Thanks
