Do you think we should let Battlefront 2 die?(Poll and talk)

I was talking to someone who feels that
Mr. Guy I talked to wrote:...Even tho your working on a dead game trying to keep it alive. I dont understand why people just dont start bringing star wars to other games with better engines, like the star wars mod in cod4. Why doesnt gt do that? Since swbf2 is dead. and the whole of gt are just recycling mods.
THEWULFMAN wrote:My mod is not recycled
Mr. Guy I talked to wrote:Your mod is, its just creating new sides again with just the cw skins.
THEWULFMAN wrote: And what are you supposed to do with swbf2 instead
Mr. Guy I talked to wrote:Let it die and work on new games. Since no one plays swbf2 anymore.
And I wanted to get GTs Opinion on it.
I feel if you enjoy something, you should not stop doing it because its old. A mod like Dark Times 2, and the likes, can breathe new life into a game like SWBF2.
I feel the modders are doing their part in keeping the game alive. I know a lot of people have stopped playing on the PS2 version because the servers are empty and they don't want to ply it on their PS3.
I am always very happy to see new modders, and that means people still want to start modding this great game.
Sure, there are better engines than Zero, but I happen to be a fan of Zero, I think its a good engine for its time, and you can do some really fun stuff with it.
So what say you, people of GT, my friends and fellow modders. Should we just let the game die and never mod it again? Or should we keep doing what makes us happy?
Oh, and from I here, tens of thousands still play the game.

I started to write out a response to Mr. Guy, but then I realized how pointless it would be. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, although in mine he's completely wrong. I do take issue with his claim of "the whole of gt are just recycling mods."
I mean, does this guy mod at all? I've always liked seeing new mods myself. Sure, some may have similar weapons, skins, classes, etc. but none are "recycled" from others in anyway. And I have yet to see two maps that are even close to the same and very few that are even similar.
We have maps like those of all the really well-known mappers and maps like DMI which are the collective work of quite a few different makers. The maps that exist now encompass a huge variety of environments and landscapes, urban, jungle, ice, you name it. The only real kicker is that the game doesn't have an auto-downloader for custom maps, but then again I don't think that is too common even now.
I hardly consider SWBF2 to be dead at all, I mean the Mercs server is nearly full even late late at night (where I live of course) and other servers fill up pretty well on the weekends...

An old game is an old game is an old game. People still play SWBF1 online, why not SWBF2? So what if there are other, more popular FPS's out there? COD fanboys can go play COD. I'll stick with my Star Wars.
Mr. Guy I talked to wrote:Your mod is, its just creating new sides again with just the cw skins.
If that's his defintion of recycling, then ANY mod would just be recycling. "Just creating new sides with Star Wars skins."
Besides, with licensing issues, Star Wars games are really the only games that it would be LEGAL to make Star Wars mods for.
I've heard the "Just let the game die" argument one too many times, in my opinion. It's a fun game, let me play what I want, for Pete's sake, and stop bugging me about what I SHOULD be interested in. As for mods, while we may not be "breathing new life" or "bringing in more players" by modding, it does add replayability to the game for players who already love it and are getting slightly bored of the vanilla game. And while, yes, one day the community won't be large enough for it to matter, or something will happen that we can't mod anymore (one example XSI being unavailable for more than 120 days), but we're not dead yet.
Hidden/Spoiler:
However, this:
Oh, and from I here, tens of thousands still play the game.
Is probably not true. Xfire averages just under 1,000 players per day, and I know not everyone who plays has Xfire, but if we take "tens of thousands" literally, we'd need at least 20,000. And I don't think there are 19,000 players who play BFII without Xfire, even with the fairly recent Steam community addition.
So tell Mr. Guy to get off our backs and go play COD with a community full of immature brats. I'll stick to Star Wars.

I think there's no problem making a Star Wars mod for another game (with permission from LA I'm guessing) but I think that Jedi or using anything from the KOTOR era could cause problems (I've seen warning against using them).

Okay well to a degree he is right, just because a mod has a different environment really doesn't make it loads different from the stock game. New skins and similar gameplay really doesn't change the game all that much.
The modding community is alive so much because of the moddability of the game. While it's not like making a whole new game off of the zero engine most mods are comparable with the DLC for a game like TFU2. On the other hand some mods are incredible, elfie's modern earth urban assault was like a new game and dt2 was also phenomenal, and also felt like a new game.
I think what it really comes down to is that it is one heck of a fun game with very solid enjoyable gameplay that in my opinion keeps up with games like COD in terms of fun.

True, but he is refering to my TCW mod, when not to sound like I am tooting my own horn, should stand up next to mods like DT2. Not in anyway saying it will be better than DT2(or DT1), but from what I am told its good. So keep in mind he was talking about my mod specifiacly when he said I am just recycling mods, that my mods is the same with just cw skins.
Other than that I am happy that so far Gt is reacting the way I thought i would.
@Twilight: LOL at your last comment.

How could anyone be so mean such an incredible game I only have it for the PS2 and I play it on Split Screen with my friends from time to time. Although I have been tempted to get for the PC a couple of times for those lovely looking mods and if the severs are anything like BF1's then I would say there is still a good lot of support behind this wonderful game.

I 100% agree with you there Zero Engine is a great engine three of my favourite games were made with that. Who ever can guess what ones they were gets a free (Picture) of a cookie.

But yeah Zero engine is just awesome if only we had the source code Then we could make BFII even better.
EDIT: Wait who was it that voted that we should let it die?

Maybe the guy who I talked to. He was banned but maybe you can vote if you are not a member, or he has a new account.

No one can tell you what games you should play or create mods for. If you're having fun, keep doing it! I've been hearing people say that Battlefront is "dying" for years now, but we're all still here. Granted, the influx of new mods is not as great as it used to be (though it has its ups and downs), the fact is they're still being made. There isn't any more to say.

The fact that the game is still modded speaks to its greatness. As to whether it should die it's foolish to tell people to "let it die" - the game will die of natural causes when people naturally lose interest.
'Nuff said.

Let's banish him 'till the borders of Creation!!!
Beyond the jokes - not so much - I think the whole matter is pointless.
I mean (I voted for keeping this awesome game alive, btw) that someone saying things like that doesn't even know WHAT modding is, it's clear.
Modding is and is born to and still mainly is the adding of new content to an old but successfull and excellent and still funny (as long as many people ask for it) game to allow for (near) infinite re-playability.
So, asking for stopping to mod a game because it is old is like to asking to stop restoring an ancient fabolous castle because it is... old.
Simply nonsense.
I also think we should not even discuss it, because as long as communities like this is still alive and active and populated, it means we' re right telling (many) people still play awesome game like this, and that that guy is simply wrong, and this is 100% sure, like few time in life you can be sure.
I don't even want to follow this topic anymore, as I would just have to repeat such basilar things again and again.
Play BF2 instead.
Keep this awesome game alive.

PLEASE, tell me who is this "Mr. Guy", I will shoot him with a sniper.
Of course we must continue to mod SWBF2.

Battlefront II was the first and only game I modded and I still play it after so many years.
I don't think it will die before Battlefront III comes out.

I Concur :plokoon:
There was a specific reason why I didn't name him, because I knew people would attack him.
Ontopic: I had battlefront 2 for the ps2 for a long time before I got it for the PC, But I knew I wanted to be a part of this modding community. I have always felt I got started late modding the game, but I enjoy it. However....
Offtopic: ...."Mr. Guy" also hates any new members to GT. Including me. He called me a part of the "New Breed" here on GT in a very insultive way. He thinks that if your not a vet, your a noob and therefore are worthless.
