A couple of my tips would be to always know your surroundings at all times. Make sure the Display Enemy Icons is on, it greatly helps with keeping track of the enemy fighters around you. Sounds simple, but it can be the difference between shooting someone down or dying in a fiery crash, because if you know where they enemy is you can plan accordingly. Also target all the incoming/nearby enemy fighters in a quick succession to find the human players, then attack them first, as they are more dangerous (most of the time). When you do spot an enemy do not attack head on, those are 50-50 chance of death. Get a missile lock, fire, then circle around the back and shoot them from the back like Darth Vader did to Gold Squadron in ANH. Or attack from below or above like a hawk, just make sure to track them and stay on their tails. If you are behind them they can't fire at you, unless its a Ywing or Transport.
If the opposite happens and all of a sudden missiles are chasing you and laser fire is coming your way fly to cover (like a cruiser), juke back and forth and up and down vary your speed, and then try to circle back to attack or land in your hangar if you are nearby if you can pull off a high speed landing. If you are caught in the middle of nowhere dive at full after burn speed and pull off more widened turns, as the goal is to try and dodge and slow down enough the other fighter can't hit you and overshoots you, then you get on their tail. If you get caught in a spinning match (where you are both just circling each other) then wait for them to make a mistake or all of a sudden slow down and as you pull to a side fire you guns, they may cross you sights and get hit, this also takes some practice and good aiming.
Also don't be afraid to shoot down the enemy AI, they are easy to get, as long as there are no human players after you and you can get invaluable awards from the points. Likewise if you are in a bomber and have some spare time try sniping other star fighters with your main guns, it may sounds crazy but it only takes two hits to take down fighters and interceptors and no one sees it coming. This can take a lot of practice though. And since all craft have unlimited everything, fire off locked missiles at anything all the time, many fighters can be taken down quickly this way, but the best time to fire is if you are right behind then, or when the missiles do not have to turn much, ie head on or similar travel vectors. Also hide using the cruisers, then once you have a fighter targeted plan a route to sneak up behind them, it may sound mean but it works, and hey that's how Jango would do it.
One more thing, teamwork is the best approach, stay close to your human wingmen and don't just go out on your own to be rambo, be Wedge and Lando instead.
