Advanced Space Combat Tips and Strategies

Post by wookieejedi »

Hi everybody! Anyway I noticed that when I searched for it I couldn't find a topic on more advanced space combat strategies, ie how to stay alive for a most of a match, how to dogfight properly, and how to out maneuver and shoot everyone down. That is the goal of this thread--a sharing communication for the pilots (sorry marines) of SWBF2. I would love to hear (if you want to share them that is) some of your toned and perfected tips and tricks to becoming and staying an ace. I have a few strategies which seem to work well, but please post your own, too!

A couple of my tips would be to always know your surroundings at all times. Make sure the Display Enemy Icons is on, it greatly helps with keeping track of the enemy fighters around you. Sounds simple, but it can be the difference between shooting someone down or dying in a fiery crash, because if you know where they enemy is you can plan accordingly. Also target all the incoming/nearby enemy fighters in a quick succession to find the human players, then attack them first, as they are more dangerous (most of the time). When you do spot an enemy do not attack head on, those are 50-50 chance of death. Get a missile lock, fire, then circle around the back and shoot them from the back like Darth Vader did to Gold Squadron in ANH. Or attack from below or above like a hawk, just make sure to track them and stay on their tails. If you are behind them they can't fire at you, unless its a Ywing or Transport.

If the opposite happens and all of a sudden missiles are chasing you and laser fire is coming your way fly to cover (like a cruiser), juke back and forth and up and down vary your speed, and then try to circle back to attack or land in your hangar if you are nearby if you can pull off a high speed landing. If you are caught in the middle of nowhere dive at full after burn speed and pull off more widened turns, as the goal is to try and dodge and slow down enough the other fighter can't hit you and overshoots you, then you get on their tail. If you get caught in a spinning match (where you are both just circling each other) then wait for them to make a mistake or all of a sudden slow down and as you pull to a side fire you guns, they may cross you sights and get hit, this also takes some practice and good aiming.

Also don't be afraid to shoot down the enemy AI, they are easy to get, as long as there are no human players after you and you can get invaluable awards from the points. Likewise if you are in a bomber and have some spare time try sniping other star fighters with your main guns, it may sounds crazy but it only takes two hits to take down fighters and interceptors and no one sees it coming. This can take a lot of practice though. And since all craft have unlimited everything, fire off locked missiles at anything all the time, many fighters can be taken down quickly this way, but the best time to fire is if you are right behind then, or when the missiles do not have to turn much, ie head on or similar travel vectors. Also hide using the cruisers, then once you have a fighter targeted plan a route to sneak up behind them, it may sound mean but it works, and hey that's how Jango would do it.

One more thing, teamwork is the best approach, stay close to your human wingmen and don't just go out on your own to be rambo, be Wedge and Lando instead. :) Phew I got a bit carried away, but please do add your own advice and tips!

Get in fighter-bomber > fly to enemy ship > board it > destroy everything you can > win.

fighter tip: don't attack capital ships or landers. try to attack from extremely high or low in the map

fighter bomber tip: use this for battling landers from far range.

bomber tip: you can use bombs to bomb the enemy landers and other ships use the bombs. the particle cannon can one-three hit kill most units so use it well.

lander tip: make sure your lander is full so the turrets are manned and also drive carefully and quickly.

general tip: avoid turrets, going under the enemy capital ship will allow you to stay safer and heal up some while flying. attacking from high or low or near the enemy hanger (above or below it) is pretty good. use pilots not marines for flying.

evasion tips: when an enemy is behind u you must go to one side using roll then the other then back again. then loop your ship backwards and then have a dog fight circling your opponent at close range using many loops and then if u can't get a lock on him then use boost and fly away and then get a shot on your enemy with rockets from there.

i have a feeling most of my tips seem like repeats of the other tips...

Those are nice and specifically helpful, I think that lasers (primary weapon) are underused by most people though, but I use them more then missiles, they are pretty good for turn shots and tail attacks.

For online players with high lag: your lasers are worthless, may as well missile spam... :cpu:

Controller: if you like flying with mouse and keyboard, go for it, but I recommend a joystick with at least twistgrip, slider, and enough buttons to do everything you need quickly, like fire, lock, tricks, boost, takeoff, exit, then in settings, set sensitivity low and deadzone as low as you can and still stay on target. Flying this way for me makes it very smooth.

Bombers: too slow to get close in with enemy fighters. Scouts can easily destroy you.

Multipurpose: a skilled multipurpose pilot can take on anything. Unless an equally skilled scout is flying.

Scouts: watch out for bombers, you may be more agile, but particle cannons are hard to dodge.

Now I need to try that joystick setting, good idea.

Agreed on the multipupose fighters, they seem to be underused.

I use a controller, similar to an xbox or PS3 controller, it isnt as good as a joystick, but its better than a keyboard.

Yeah, I always found it amusing that these huge ships had so few turrets and none on the bottom...

in movies and in more accurate games and shows they do have way more guns on the top but i still don't think i have seen any bottom ones. but i have seen side cannons.

in the Clone Wars TV show they have the hangers on top and in the star wars movie on episode 3 the cis crusier had huge guns that fire shells at the enemy from what looked like the side of the ship.
