Same model, different textures

Post by ColonelKlink »

I have recently been working on making a custom side, and have I was able to do what a wanted, although it is not as organized as I would like. Anyways, here's my question.....
There is one model that I would like to use twice, but with a different texture. How exactly would I do that? I tried to rename the msh, and all other option files, like, for example, it was all_inf_rifleman_two.msh, and all other files were named, all_inf_rifleman_two.msh.option, etc, etc, (I think you get the point), so that they are like, med_inf_assassin.msh, etc, etc. I changed the texture for the model(changed the colours), and then renamed that, med_inf_assassin.tga. When I viewed it, the model was white, and there was no custom texture. Curious, I renamed the texture back to all_inf_rifleman_two, and the custom texture showed!!! Except I can't have two textures with the same name. This is my question, is there a line in the unit's ODF, that picks the texture. I looked, and I did not see one, then again, I am only a beginner. I suspect the texture might have something to do with the actualy MSH file? Sorry if I missed something about what picks the texture.
NOTE!! all_inf_rifleman_two was only an example. I added the file type after med_inf_assassin to avoid confusion. MOST IMPORTANT NOTE......Thank you for all your help!!

EDIT: Awwww, AQT beat me....
You need to hex edit the texture, download a hex editor.
Then, it should look like "material [weirdsymbols] "nameoftexturehere"". Change the name in teh second model's msh file to the name of the second texture.
There's a better guide elsewhere on the site.

Thank you. I will do that. Is there a downloadable HEX editor that is here on gametoast? Nevermind, I'll just see. If I can learn Hex edit, that will be a big help to me. One more thing, what do you..... uh, nevermind, I will read tutorial.
Thanks again.

hmmmmm........
I already downloaded the other one. I respect your opinion highly DarthD.U.C.K., but will the other one be okay? I mean, it doesn't, like destroy the MSH or somthing right? I just want to change the texture it uses, and maybe latter on, add capes (like Count Dooku's), and the clone's "skirts". Will the other be able to do that?
Thanks for your help
