any free animation software to download. any of them good?
Well, Gmax has a pretty straightforward animation system.
XSI Modtools also have animation capabilities.

Which one would you recommend, though? I'm not sure which one to pick.

I recommend XSI mod tool, on Gmax you can't even Extrude a polygon!
