How to change skins WITHOUT creating a new map.

Does anybody know how to change the skins in the existing maps, and also in galactic conquest?
Changing the skins in Galactic Conquest involves creating a new shell to overwrite stock.
To change the skins (of units?) you do need to make a new world, but you don't have to edit it at all.
