Slightly off topic, if I buy the standalone version of Portal, can I use it to play Gmod 9 or can it only be used with Gmod 10?

No, You need Half Life 2, Counter Strike: Source and Half life 2: Deathmatch for GMOD 9..

GMOD 10 However only requires one source game and Portal will work with it.
