What is the best technique to shape flat and walkable paths up the side of mountains? I'm trying to make switchbacks but it is hard to get them looking good.

Also, what is the use of the ramp tool? i tried using it but it doesn't really make a good ramp.

Use the Ramp shape in conjunction with the Paint mode. Set the foreground value to the starting altitude and the background value to the ending altitude to "configure" your ramp brush.
