Yea, it comes in just a jewel case, without (presumably) a manual. Not to worry though, the control scheme is very simple to understand.
Great game, stunning visuals with graphical requirements so low that it will even work on your mom's laptop.

I have heard, hmm, 'legends' of people who can evade every energy blast you shoot at them.

Don't go to the eastern (relative to the map) systems until you have a very strong ship. They are dangerous. I learned that the hard way, was stuck in a space station for 3 (real life) days, there were bounty hunters outside that wanted to get me and I didn't know what the hell I could do to get away from them.

1. once you get it, download the Discovery mod. It adds a bunch of ships, planets, stations, factions, improves the AI, and all sorts of other stuff.
2. Like Nihillo said, best to avoid the Omnicron, Tau, Sigma, and Omega star clusters early on. Better to stay in the "civilized" core and west side. There is military protection, and police presence there that doesn't exist in the outer systems.
3. Keep loaded up on nanobots, and shield batteries to repair your hull and shields. You never know when a trade lane might be disrupted, forcing you into a fight or flight scenario.
4. Explore everything! This is helpful in finding new ships, jump gates, jump holes, trade goods, trade routes, astriod fields. For instance there is an astroid field in one system that you can mine diamonds from.
5. When in combat, opponents sometimes launch mines at you. Try and shoot the mines just as they exit their ship, to damage them, or atleast try to shoot the mines before they hit you.
That's about it for the major stuff.
