Random crashes

Post by skelltor »

Ok so i start playing a game with BFSM but partly through it crashes. sometimes on the first map in the list other times the second or third its not one specific unit or map. I have not run the BF2_modtools_NoDVD because sometimes it takes like 45 minets to crash also i am somtimes getting single player lag is there a way to fix that?

Skelltor, I suggest you read up on Wikipedia what "lag" is because its impossible to have on single player. You probably have things running in the background that is making it run slow. I recommend this to help stop programs running that you don't want while gaming: http://www.iobit.com/gamebooster.html

Nitpicking isn't really necessary - he doesn't mean "latency" lag, he means a perceived lag as a result of low FPM.

Sometimes maps crash like that, I know the Conversion Pack has a few.

That is why I suggested Game Booster, because he probably had other things running. It could also be the reason why his maps are crashing.

He probably is just overloading the loaded memory the game can handle. I might agree with you if he said that he were having problems loading things right away, but it's a delayed problem - which he said in his original post. There's no reason to download an extra program to fix a problem that's not there.

That's probably not the best thing to do. You're best off leaving the computer alone while munging anything.

I use it because you can stop unessential programs (examples: Windows Defender, Windows Update, Java Platforms) from running while you're playing. It helps with both internet lag and memory problems; It slows down your RAM. I don't see anyone else suggesting anything.

Yes - Don't munge while your playing.

There's nothing to suggest. The problem is probably a memory one and all he can do is try to use fewer resources for any given mission loaded.

Munging is a huge resource hog, and obviously he shouldn't be doing that. However, if that's not the cause of the problem (that is to say if it's not happening all the time these crashes do), then it's not something to worry about specifically here (although it should obviously be done some other time).

Turning off programs like you mention give you only incremental boosts in performance (nothing that will affect this situation), and if you don't know how to turn off those programs manually (and when you can or should do it), then you probably shouldn't be using some third-party software to do the job for you. It's just as likely that you'll end up mistakenly leaving one of those programs off and then painting yourself into a corner in the future when you need one running (since you didn't know about it in the first place!).

Just leave the munging process/your computer alone if you don't want any problems.

Your probably be right about that, do you think it would say in his bf2 error log?

He is having "lag" problems, I imagine his game is running slow. I am sure it is running slow because of other programs. I have had experience myself with stopping programs while playing your game, and I have seen the effects, it does speed it up. I don't know about the crashing, that is likely a memory problem.

The program you use to surf the web also takes up RAM. When I start up SWBF2 I make sure nothing is running that doesn't need be. I open up the Task Manager and go through everything. I personally, would never have a web browser open while running a game. Why would you need to anyway?

You could try reinstalling your game if it continues to slow/crash. It could be a drive error, or part of your hard drive could be corrupt.

His FPM drops are almost certainly related to programs he is actively using (his mention of using VisualMunge while playing is very telling) - I wasn't even addressing that, since that was correctly assessed by you and others as being the result of the abovementioned. I was really only addressing his crashing issues (the only reason I opposed the mention of using a game "booster" like you mention is because I don't think it's wise to shut down background nonessential programs if you don't already know what they are, as I mentioned above).

I still would like to see his error log.

Game Booster gives you a list of programs you would like to turn off temporarily. You turn them back on again when you're done with your game. Its not like you can accidentally turn off Windows or anything important.

Here dude have you tried to reinstall? That can fix tons of problems by itself, second are you using a laptop, specs, OS? Is your Hard Drive Corrupted in any way? But the best thing for you to do is probably do a reinstall. Do you crash randomly on random maps or regular maps?
Next your fps is low because your comp sucks or as Fasty said you are running to many programs and lack the Ram. So either shut down some programs or buy more RAM.
