Bandtoast - Get More From Your Band

I know a lot of people here play instruments, if you do, please post and say so!

I play tin whistle/flute, and I'm interested in a lot of Irish music.

And somewhere along the line, we got an idea to form a band over the internet. There's a few options, one is to just record the parts separately and mix them together. Or we could use a high speed voice servers like those at Skype or Ventrolio to play live! Lase and I were going over this and decided to post a topic about it. I think it's an intriguing possibility, whether it works is yet to be seen :) Probably all those implications would make it impractical, but you never know.

Roster of people who can play instruments (not necessarily in bandtoast):
  • Challenger - Sax, piano
  • JackSractch - vocals, bass, baritone horn/euphonium if we need something like that
  • Maveritchell - Sax (tenor and alto)
  • {501st}Commander_Appo - Guitar
  • Commander_Cody771 - A little guitar (not a big one) and piano
  • Grev - Guitar=strongest, Piano, drums,
  • Ipodzanyman - Cello and elec. bass
  • Lase - Double Bass, Clarinet, and Piano.
  • Raptor522 - Trombone, guitar, & bass guitar.
  • RepSharpshooter - Tin Whistle, flute, piccolo
  • Taivyx - Clarinet
  • Thire - Trumpet

Heh, yeah, you and I have gone over this a bit as well. As most of you probably know, I play piano and alto saxophone, and am learning guitar.

On a somewhat unrelated note, I have recently formed a band with two of my friends (from school) and we're having our first song professionally recorded already. :P

I'm learning guitar, and so far I'm doing well, and I also kind of play the piano and drums, by which I mean I paly drumsets and african drums (My grandpa works in the U.N., I get stuff like that) and the banjo. Oh, and I play the harmonica as well.

EDIT: I like the xfire status rep.

I play tenor sax and over the past few months I've been working a lot on guitar, and I also do lots of singing, but I don't have the necessary equipment to record anything and I only have a dial-up connection. With those two combined, I couldn't be of much use. Still, sounds like a pretty cool idea. I didn't even know things like Skype and Ventrolio existed. With the variety of instruments people have mentioned so far, you could come up with some pretty cool stuff.

Me and rep were toying with Latency and we're not sure how easy it would be to rehearse. We're going to have to rehearse with lag and then each person records their own part and we send it to like me and I can sync them all-together...

Unless we find a faster technology of course.

EDIT:

[15:53] [GT]Lase[LH][7.62S]: Also! When we were doing that
[15:53] [GT]Lase[LH][7.62S]: with the tapping
[15:53] [GT]Lase[LH][7.62S]: you gotta reliaze that if i tap and it comes out ur headphones u have to WAIT for your mic to pick it up and then SEND IT BACK
[15:53] [GT]Lase[LH][7.62S]: thats probably we had the lag....
[15:53] [GT]Lase[LH][7.62S]: *why
[15:54] =LH=RepSнarpsнooтer: Yeah
[15:54] =LH=RepSнarpsнooтer: it's twice the lag
[15:54] =LH=RepSнarpsнooтer: so you heard 1 second
[15:54] =LH=RepSнarpsнooтer: it's really .5 seconds

Okay, it might not be as bad as we thought...

That's what we may have to do. Here's a diagram of the issue facing internet bands:

View PDF 1.4 Diagram

EDIT also:
[16:59] =LH=RepSнarpsнooтer: Well. If computer 1 played very good, and constant, then computers 1-40 (in theory) could play along with that AND ONLY COMPUTER 1. That way they'd have the same effect, they'd hear themselves all synched with computer 1
[16:59] =LH=RepSнarpsнooтer: but not with eachother

So in theory, a ton of people could play along with one other person, but not with eachother. And it;s a one way trip. Computer 1 can't hear the other people.

Yep we'll have to use the dubbing method first. I'm thinking maybe the drums or low instruments can record first along with a metronome, then people can synch in on top of that.

Roster of people who can play instruments (not necessarily in bandtoast):
  • Challenger - Sax, bit of piano
  • {501st}Commander_Appo - Guitar
  • Commander_Cody771 - A little guitar (not a big one) and piano
  • Grev - Guitar=strongest, Piano, drums,
  • Ipodzanyman - Cello and elec. bass
  • Lase - Double Bass, Clarinet, and Piano.
  • Raptor522 - Trombone, guitar, & bass guitar.
  • RepSharpshooter - Tin Whistle, flute, piccolo
  • Taivyx - Clarinet
  • Thire - Trumpet

Ok, I can pick up and sort of compose toons on the piano by ear, but guitar is my strong part. So I'd say change the roster to guitar for me please! Its acoustic, so no loudness worries. And we can use sibelious Scorch to compose the stuff. Look it up on google.

I have Finale 2008 (full version) if we ever need to compose anything. Anybody have some ideas on songs to play? I was thinking maybe we'd do an easy test piece to start off.
