Re: Scariest games you have ever played!
Steam is a free program and is very.. very useful. I suggest you download it if you can. As for L4D, I cannot download due to the limits on my internet but I did get a good play this weekend at a friends who has all the latest games. Its not "scary" but it can make you jump especially when you get separated from your group mates.

yep, your mates make the game not scary
in almost every horror game you are 'alone in the dark', thats what makes them scary, heck even a simple shooter is scary at hardest difficulties

Re: Scariest games you have ever played!
I'm just going to list whatever comes to mind.
Trespasser - It's not meant to be a scary game, but there are situations where it can get the blood pumping a little. Mostly, it's just a raptor that somehow got too close, which makes you fire even less accurately than before. O_O Then there are the times when they somehow manage to get behind you, or trap you without any ammo left. The real scare for me was in the third level when you make it out of a jungle and into a clearing. The next thing you see is a full grown T. rex heading right for you. The first time I saw that, I ran back into the jungle!
It was made worse by hearing it growling at me in frustration.
Doom - Yeah, the classic. The boss designs were the ones that kind of got to me.
KotOR - The Manaan base was creepy. Food for fishy! Chomp! Chomp!
KotOR 2 - The scene from when your party first sees Darth Sion staring at you from the other side of the passageway. For some reason I still get a slight chill when I see it.
any Tomb Raider game - I've always hated the old boulder traps. TLR was kind of creepy, in general.
Hellgate: London - It's not really scary most of the time, but I've always thought those temples on the other side of the Hellrifts were creepy.
Doom 3 - They just had to turn off the Diet Dr. Pepper lights. -_- This game has made me jump more than once, and I've actually stopped playing in order to calm myself. With this game, it's more the ambience they made with this that did it. I would go around reading the logs, and the one where it mentions the possessed machinery was really freaky to me, besides the whispering voices, glowing walls, and dead people asking me to save them.
Aliens vs. Predator (both) - Say what you want about the graphics, but Xenomorphs give me nightmares to this day.
Obviously, I'm using the Marine's perspective. Not only that, but they're faster than you are, and they climb on the freakin' walls! Just hearing a drone's, or a facehugger's, claws scratching around would be enough for me to send grenades in all conceivable directions, and a few that aren't.
Btw, yes, yes I have set myself on fire, pulse naded myself, time naded myself, and shot at walls in the confusion. Add the Preatorian, or the Queen, and it's game over, man. Game over. I'm especially fond of (see: freaked out by) the first game, because it seems to try for the look and feel of the movies, and does a very good job of it.
Dead Space - Oh. my. freaking. gord. Whoever made this has to have been to the other side, or something. I swear these people hacked into my brain, took the creatures from my nightmares and threw them into a video game. I have seriously never been so scared by a game that upon seeing a monster, I would simultaneously try to make my guy run, scream, and pull myself away from the computer. If you take a close look at the walls, that's what really gets me. Both the "messages" and the strange writing, which I swear I know from somewhere. *blink* I never play this just before bed, if that says anything.

how could i forget aliens versus predator
the second one was not that scary, at least not if you play as an alien or predator
but the first one... hell was it scary, and extremely hard (never made the hardest difficulty to unlock all bonus missions)

Re: Scariest games you have ever played!
I never completed Director's Cut, either, though I'd tried to work on that about a month or two ago. It scared me so much I stopped playing and never went back.
Yeah, the second one isn't as scary in general, but I really think it has much to do with the fact that you're playing a role (Harrison, or somesuch) and there's a story unfolding in the form of FMV sequences. For me, that's the part where I detach myself from the character I'm playing, though it makes little difference during the missions. The missions themselves and the overall gameplay I'd say is as good as or better than the first, but something changed that I can't quite name anymore. As for Xenomorph and Predator campaigns, of course they're not as scary for either game. The human is the prey among the three races, and we identify with our own perspective.

Re: Scariest games you have ever played!
Whew I hate that feeling. I start out with some scary stuff while no one else is around, then I hear the smallest little pops in the house and then it starts to get scary, then I hear some more common sounds and I just freak out. I turn all the lights on to check the whole house, and then I leave them on and after I hear some more sounds again I just go into my room. Im a coward.MasterSaitek009 wrote:I was 11, home alone, at night, in the dark. Playing Dark Forces for the first time!
That was freaky. DF was the first FPS that I played. It felt like everyone was hiding. Just waiting for me to turn my back. Then I started hearing noises in the house. It ranks right up there as one of the scariest situations of my life.

I've been playing Left 4 Dead, and it's not quite, "Boo!" scary but more, "Holy...[insert surprised comment here]!"

Yeah, that's kind of what I meant. If you think the demo is insane, you have no idea.

Re: Scariest games you have ever played!
My critique on some of the "scary" games
FEAR- not really scary, I was more annoyed at the gameplay then scared.
Doom 3- scarier with hi-res mods, but the weapons u have access to makes you feel like your just mopping up freaks
Half-Life 2- fast zombies were scary but then they got overused
Halo- their introductions into the games were nice but they weren't really frightening when you actually started to fight them
Dead Space- the beginning was really scary but then a bunch of weird things showed up:
Infected Babies- they shoot out bio missles wtf?
Huge thing- EXACTLY like the tank form from Halo, only more annoying to kill
A space BASKETBALL minigame where you kill the babies and throw them back into the score
All the infected turned all black and weird looking.
EDIT:
L4D- not that scary, zombies just look like normal people on grayscale, way to easy.
