The Best Maps of All Time
Hey, I'm looking to refill my addon folder, and I wanted your guys opinions on what the best mas of all time are. I'm specifically looking for some fun maps that always stay in your addon folder, because they are just great maps. Anyone have any suggestions?

I'll just post this link rather than spend two minutes typing. Covers most of the same thing, anyway.

Re: The Best Maps of All Time
Anything made by Mav should definately be on your PC.
Another easy way to find good maps, is to go to SWBF Files, and get the maps with the most downloads. Good maps will have a lot of downloads.
Edit: DANGIT!! Ninja'd again!

I'd have to say Pestox: Urban Wasteland has the best environment, while Training Installation ICC-Whatever has the most fun/interesting replay value.

I think AQT's Republic Commando: Extraction was very entertaining, and you should download Majin Revan's old Rise of the Empire map series (they're lots of fun, but personally, i like his BF1 maps better).

Umm, not true... there are some good maps with lots of downloads, but only very few.THEWULFMAN wrote:Another easy way to find good maps, is to go to SWBF Files, and get the maps with the most downloads. Good maps will have a lot of downloads.
Take a look at Jendo07's maps, they are really good!

Its all up to opinion...
Somone who loves poorly placed objects with no ryme or reason floating above the ground with default units could say a map is awsome.
I dont realy know of any jungle maps...
So im just gonna say Christmas in jinglin town (ironicly) and defualt Endor...

I don't see the point in arguing this point. All the maps I listed as examples should be respected somewhat at least.
As for good Jungle maps, yeah I can't think of many myself.

Re: The Best Maps of All Time
The ones I find myself playing the most are:
Training Installation IC-177 by The_Nasal_Abyss
Death Star II: Emperor's Throne Room by Maveritchell
Mos Eisley Spaceport by Rends
Oh and Alderaan from the Conversion Pack, but the pack takes up a lot of space, so if you're just looking for individual maps, I don't recommend it. Though it DOES have a lot of good maps in there (specifically, the ones from BF1, but you can get those from Marvel4, too), I'm not a huge fan of every map in there.

Of course there are good maps with many downloads, but there also bad maps with many downloads or good maps with few downloads.THEWULFMAN wrote:Abraxas Platform: 14000+Marvel4 wrote:Umm, not true... there are some good maps with lots of downloads, but only very few.THEWULFMAN wrote:Another easy way to find good maps, is to go to SWBF Files, and get the maps with the most downloads. Re: The Best Maps of All Time
A good map can be released like one week ago, and it'll not have lot of downloads compared to a 2006 map, that's logic. For my part, i have tested all the maps of swbf filefront and kept them classed by Makers on my external hard drive + GT ones + Exclusive betas and alphas and others. (752 maps or mods).Marvel4 wrote:Of course there are good maps with many downloads, but there also bad maps with many downloads or good maps with few downloads.

Re: The Best Maps of All Time
Mav made a really cheesy wild crazy map under the pseudonym something-helicopter just to test this out. It got quite a few downloads if I remember correctly.THEWULFMAN wrote:Of course...1FGR1NightGhost wrote:Its all up to opinion...Tell me which of the maps I listed has "poorly placed objects with no ryme or reason floating above the ground". Also, Ghost wasn't calling you out. He was basically saying that download numbers are often skewed by taste, not quality.

Re: The Best Maps of All Time
I never said any of the maps you called out sucked... I was just saying not every player has the same tastes and opinions of every other player...THEWULFMAN wrote:Of course...1FGR1NightGhost wrote:Its all up to opinion...Tell me which of the maps I listed has "poorly placed objects with no ryme or reason floating above the ground". For Example: Loads of people LOVE death star, i think its a metal, under-sized claustrophobic hellhole...
Im just saying everyone has their own idea of what makes a map good, thats all...

Re: The Best Maps of All Time
Re: Maps with lots of downloads as a measure of quality:
Let's keep it friendly and on-topic. Just to clear up any confusion, there are a handful of factors that go into how often a map is downloaded that have nothing to do with the quality of the map - two big ones are time the map was submitted and alphabetical order. Maps high in the alphabet with familiar names tend to get high download numbers, and if you do a sort by downloads on SWBFFiles, you'll see this. You'll also notice that the vast majority of the highly downloaded maps tend to have been submitted in 2007 or 2006 - four or five years ago. They've simply had more time to be downloaded, and more popular maps get downloaded more - it's a self-perpetuating cycle.
That doesn't mean that a high download count isn't indicative of a quality map. Inevitably, quality will draw people in. However, if you search by downloads alone, what you'll see is representative of far more than just quality as a metric.
Now, re: The OP:
"Best" is probably an unfair title, since there are lots of ways to judge this. Some maps may have really nice design but poor art, while some may look really nice but have a poor gameplay feel, and others may be technically great but simply lacking in polish. I keep maps for a lot of reasons, and here are some of the maps that populate my addon folder and their reasons:

Some of those are old chestnuts, of course, and I certainly don't have links to every map that I enjoy. However, since I have the privilege of reviewing and uploading the majority of maps that are published, I usually know where to go back to look when I want to play a map.
