Spawn as a fighter already out in space?

something im doing really calls this since the cruisers i made do not have hangers and fighter squadrons just dropped from hyperspace rather than launching from the frigates. i wanted to keep this as close to what its supposed to be as possible so im wondering if i can spawn already in a fighter out in space. i remember psych0fred said that it might be possible and if so i need some info on how to do it.

Instead of putting units on the lua to spawn, try putting a vehicle.

Never tried that... Almost shure it won't work

Two ways that I can think of doing something remotely like that:

You could spawn inside the cap ship or somthing, but immediently be forced inside a fighter (that spawns outside) via the .lua (I'm not sure exactly how to do that, but I know it's possible).

You could make the room with all the chairs in it (the one that's usually used to control turrets), and have the chairs control the fighters instead. That would be kind of weird for your purposes, though, since you wouldn't actaully be inside the fighter.

Problem with both of these is that the fighter will start out landed, pretty much no matter what. In space. If there's a way to stop that- I dunno how- but it would take extensive .odf editing, I think.

I think that Astute had a solution, or was working on one.

I tried this a long time ago for a Death Star map I wanted to do, but it didn't work, so I never did look too far into it. I'm not sure it's possible, to tell you the truth. But according to Epena, appearently Astute figured something out, so I'm not sure.

Couldn't you make the ships into units? Then wouldn't it be possible to spawn as a ship directly into battle? It would probably take a long time to implement, though--you'd have to completely reinvent everything.

Has that already been tried?

If I remember well there was a topic about this a while ago. No-one found a way to do it though, and starfighters cannot be spawned as a soldierclass...

If I recall correctly the topic ended with the idea of "forcing units into the starfighters" using boundries, but I think the AI would just stand around doing nothing.

I can't find the topic anymore though :P

see like if i make a battle over telos map from kotor 2 then i would need the fighters to spawn in space since the republic cruisers of that era were merely dreadnoughts and not cruisers/carriers, if you watch the cut scenes from that game youll see the fighters hyper out along side the cruisers.

Well, if I recall the discussion correctly, it was possible to force a unit into a pre-existing vehicle, but a vehicle spawned via lua is built in the wrong order by the engine, so no weapons work.

You could make the republic have a limited supply of starfighters by placing them as objects rather than throught vehicle spawns, ZE animate the vehicles to make them look like they're making a hyperspace jump, and then force a unit into them.

I know for a fact that they do this in the regular shipped maps. If you look carefully, some of the fighters appear out of the boundries of the map and come into the battle :?

YA it's true those fighters you see coming in to the battle from nowhere or flying out of OUT OF BOUNDS they just spawn

Why not make a make a base for the Republic, let them go into their fighters and fly (let em spawn inside the object, so they can get out but not in) to the battle(let it apear as if they're going trough hyperspace...maybe an object with a animated hyperspace texture :P). I'm not sure but I believe this was done before... on a deathstarmap. Might have been Battlefront I tough.

There's one of those used in front of the Tantive IV window.

trainmaster hass an extremely good point, and the big question is: HOW and WHY do they do that? :P

Otherwise, Mini' - you COULD make the AutoPilot for the vehicles, and make a mission which you gotta complete to win the map...

I thought I was crazy when I saw those. :D I would agree with pursuing that.

No they're not. I can actually see fighters entering and some of them have shot at me and I can see the little enemy icons appera above them. I have just looked out into nothingness and seen a fighter, and its correspoding icon, suddenly appear. 8)

Have you seen that as well with the viewing distance and the lod distance at full?

rc is right, they dont appear outta nowhere, you guys just have poopie PCs with the video settings really low so they fade outta view and back into it.
