Geonosis: Engagement WIP

Alright folks, so some of you have heard of my work on this, and since, for a new modder like me (who doesnt have a reputation) its hard to get the response/feedback (more importantly help) because people lose interest real fast, i figured i'd throw you all a bone.

This is my second map (first is much bigger therefore still in the early WIP stage)

For features heres a list:

- New sides set up, accurate names and weapons, accurate damage etc (for example droids have more endurance but are weaker, exluding sbd and droideka, whereas soldiers are armoured better but cant run as long)

- Accurate vehicle weapons according to numerous online resources

- strenghts and weaknesses for each class and vehicle, more importantly realistic (hailfire easily disposes of an at-te, but a detpack alone can dispatch it)

Basically my maps will traverse through the clone wars/gcw (perhaps earlier once assets are in place), each planet a chapter, each battle a part.

Its basically done. For the first release I need sounds for: DN Bolt Caster, Droid Starfighter, Republic Gunship, AT-TE, Spider Walker, STAP, Barcspeeder, Fightertank, and Hailfire Droid, and most of all confusing, Geonosians/Sonic Blaster.

I know this might come across as lazy, but if someone could show me a set up sound files, and attach them, for these specific things, it would help me understand things loads better. I can never get everything I want working, and through reading Rends great tut over and over, I just need to see one set up, but with just the things i need, as its confusing when there are a bunch of unknown entries.

Anyhow, for the second/final release (hopefully ill get me hands on some assets, such as the dc series weapons (pistol, clone commander gun etc,) and the vehicles (v-19 to be specific, and maybe geo fighter cause my last attempt to port it corrupted my map)

Im also considering changing the entire gameplay of Hero Assault, making it much different, but thats all in the iffy how things go stage, more on that later.

Anyway, if i can get the sounds working, for EVERYTHING (no half-rear end releases from me, not releasing till im atleast somewhat happy with it), you'll have yourselves another hopefully fun map.

Well, the only thing I can say is "WOW" The lighting looks awsome... and I like geonosis :) Anyways, I see one bug from the pictures :S That is, in the republic crusier you can see the sky through the hangar :? Anyways, I can't wait till the final release.

The maps look really good!! I like the color of the ground. Nice Idea with the troopers ranks instead of classes, it's more like in ep II, I like it. Looks promissing!!

Nice work Tuskenjedi, looks like a this will be a lot of fun!

Edit: Its a good thing im not tuskenjedi or that might've made sense.

Im embarrased because I showcased my shadow droid. Its just fun to be invisible and have the ability to shoot. Like you guys have no idea. In the fog you are totally gone. Its pa-sick.

JabbaLovesLava: although this could be considered a bug, its not technically. Simply a matter of view distance (maybe LOD distance could have play here but I doubt it) My view and lod distance are set to 70. putting it up to 100 would most likely remove that issue.

RevanSithLord: Yeah there are 420 units on the field at any given time (210 per team). I also might make a Hero Assault, which is much different than regular Hero Assault, so different that the only reason I use Hero Assault is because how you use Heroes plays a huge role, ill explain at the end of this post.

But before I do that, i'd like to say that you dont have to like be nice or modest about things. Well that sounds weird, but I mean if you have an idea, throw it out there. I'd rather have a happy community, who is willing to give candid advice, than be all arrogant and like 'im the man'. What im getting at is if you would change something or want me to do something, dont worry about modesty. Throw your ideas out there, I will take them into consideration.


Okay on to my hero assault mode.

For all my maps (at least outdoor/open space ones, indoor maps like death star turn into a big game of laser tag when unit count is way high) I wanted XL, because it does sooo much better in capturing the feel of a battle.

And in this i decided that, especially for large maps, infinite reinforcements are a must (in the beginning, with say 1000 reinforcements, it plays fine. but when it gets down to 5 people on a team, and you've got a massive map, it turns into a boring, 'cant wait to get off this map' experience).

But then i ran into the issue that it is nearly impossible to win - with the same amount of units on the field at a time, when its down to 1 cp it turns crazy. So this is where heroes come in.

They will have a lot more health, their force powers will do more damage, and usually the lightsaber hits are 1 hitter quitters. So basically in order to win in any reasonable amount of time, its necessary to use the heroes properly, and not waste their power on trivial tasks - they need to be heading the battle, capturing that hostile overriden cp.

Once again all i need is the sound, any help explaining how i can get the aforementioned sounds in would help immensly, and set this map up for a release.

Sorry for dp, just trying to spread this stuff out.

Question: Any advice anyones got?

And should i make my droids more orange? I dont want them to be rainbow colors, but i just want to know if i should make them more orang-y. Im leaning towards no because im a lazy bum and they look accurate enough to me. (in comparison to movie i mean)

Use the localize tool. What you do is delete every tip, except for 1, then you put what you want in that tip.

That way, whenever you play your map, it only says that 1 tip. It has no effect on other maps.

Its all good.

made me laugh because it was totally random and out of place.


And Penguin has offered (obviously) to make some videos. So dont worry about the clips mentioned earlier. Ill let her do her thing and make a nice not 30 second one.

ps. make sure to pipe up if you've helped me, i want to make sure i include everyone whoes either given me a helping hand or allowed me to use their assets. sharing models and whatever is a big deal to me since im not the moddeler type, and it helps immensly. so i want to give credit where credit is due.

Ive burnt shadows in and everything.

I have to say im not a good screenshot taker. Ironically the best, most picturesque (is that even a word?) screenshot in my opinion (of the geonosian walking in front of camera) was taken automatically - i set fraps takes screen shots every 5 seconds. Its really dusty and foggy, and if my sky was working (i have it all set up, (it worked before but recently, after i messed with sound, stopped) but its not reading my new sky tgas- which are just simple recolors of the geo sky.) it would be more like dusk.

And once i get a good video, you guys can see some of the terrain better and get a feel for how the map plays and the battlefield.

yeah i have sunlight and everything.

and i just checked -

there are shadows.

see to get more control over lighting i often use 2 lights, it lets me angle them accordingly (only 1 casts shadows, so i position the first, burn the terrain to get the ruedimentary shadow effects for my map, then place the other and move them accordingly so i can get the lighting and shadows i want.)

So yeah the player casts shadows. just a bad angle. i would post a screen shot but i see no need.
