Which one should I get?

I seriously think you should get bf2142. Even though people say that it's just "modded bf2", It features a lot of bug fixes from bf2 and is obviously more supported than bf2 with patches and stuff. If you don't already have bf2, definately get bf2142.
(it also helps to decide if you like near-future combat )

Well BF2 has more goodies out 4 it, like an expansion pack, 2 booster pack, and other stuff through patches (wake island)
BF2142 has more stuff to keep you busy. ex Titan mode
Also what's you main purpose of playing it? Multi or Single?
Single is just instant action in BF2. I heard there is a story in BF2142.
But the main 4 getting BF2 or BF2142 is the Multiplayer. Which both are good.

In the end it comes down to which time era do you want to fight in?

true, bf2 has expansions out, but i'm sure there'll be some for bf2142 too.
And if you want to go for singleplayer, then buy neither. bf2142 singleplayer doesn't support more than 16 bots leaving titan out.
