Welcome to Gametoast. Yes, it is worth downloading and installing if you don't already have it. For one thing it is required in order for custom user-made mods and maps to work properly, and this is a SWBF2 modding site. So many members here at Gametoast have it, either with the patch or pre-installed with the retailed game, and don't have any problems with it. Those "many people" (care to mention who they are?) that you referred to most likely don't know what they are talking about.

If you download the correct patch, there is nothing to worry about. It depends in which coutry you bought the game and if it is a DVD or a CD. (Well the first time I got it wrong :P , but then it worked)

well, it doesnt make the game crash. you can only play online on 1.1 servers and gotta install the right version or its gonna ask you for a cd/dvd. thats all. for everything you will find people who complain about crashing or whatever. unless its more than the half of comments i wouldnt worry. they either didnt set it up right or its their unqiues hardware/software configuration that causes the problems.
