Gota start somewhere- changing an objects appearance?

I have been trying to change the bespin landing zone textures and name.
But the renamed .msh crashes the editor... every darn time.
I have renamed .msh, .odf and option file, and swapped out the old .tga files.
No spaces in file names, all original file names changed to refer to the new name and everything seems to refer correctly.

I looked for an idiot guide to assist but can find nothing that gives a step by step that will solve this.

Help please, this is driving me nuts.

Do you change the tga in the msh into a tga with more characters than the orginally tga file? If so, don't do that change it to a tga with the same length.

I have tried your suggestion, renaming a number of files to fit the appropriate length. I have done this with both .tga and .msh, in hi and lo rez.

As far as I understand it, all files are there and everything is linked.
But regardless of how i go about it, or checking, I must be doing something that is causing a crash in zero edit. I think it is simply a case of something is not being done, because I don't know it has to be.
Unfortunately I cannot see the problem.

Any pointers will be gratefully received.

Have you made a new tga or painted over the old one?

if it's a new one, did you use a text editor or a hex editor to change the tga name inside the msh file?

your renaming the .msh , .odf , etc?

are you going IN the ODF and changing the .msh it points to , to fit your newly named .msh? cos if not, you should

edit* ooops i see you said you have.

out of interest why are you renaming the msh etc? are you tryin to use 2 differently textured platforms or somethin?

if so dont you have to hex edit ?

I was using notepad [Windows XP] to edit .msh in place.

Here's the idea.

Setting is Endor. Imperial LRRP Base using Bespin gas cells and platform parts along with a few from Tatooine/Hoth. A chance to use ATAT/ ATST, Imperial officer, DLT19, T21 in a historical setting. Rearming the ATST to use copilot dual cannon with a launcher, depending on whether the lasers behave themselves.

INTENT:
Bespin landing zone as a prop bldg [ the small stand- alone landing platform] as a Tie/ shuttle LZ. The textures need to change to the Bespin platforms- the dirty grey brown look used on the gas cells. An in game texture.

I will detailed post on what modifcations were done to the bespin lz... more to follow.

Here we go. This is the sequence of events

All text changes done with notepad, Windows XP.
No .tga files have been modified apart from renaming.

"bes2_bldg_d_landingzone" msh, odf and .msh files copied and named "bk_endlv_pb_landingzone" msh, odf etc.

All required .tga, bump and lowrez for the new look landing zone are copied and renamed, matching length of the original selected .tga filename: e.g. "bes2_bldg_set02" renamed to "bk_endlv_set002"

.odf file changed to reflect renamed "bk_endlv_pb_landingzone" & "bk_endlv_pb_landingzone.msh"

"bk_endlv_pb_landingzone.msh" file changed to reflect renamed bump files, e.g. "bes2_bldg_set02" changed to "bk_endlv_set002"

Searched and renamed .tga files in "bk_endlv_pb_landingzone" msh, replacing .tga files with similar namelength .tga files.

Saved all files & placed in respective MSH & ODF ModID folders.

ZEROEDIT will crash upon the ODF being selected.

Somewhere here I have dropped the ball & I have been bolean looping with this for some time. Please advise.

There must be a simple answer.

Thanks awfully.

simple answer: you need to edit .msh files with a hex editor, using notepad won't work.

check the ultimate tips sticky at the top of the forum, I posted a picture of what you need to edit different file types and how they fit together.
