For me it's about the longevity of the game. Now I love Star Wars and to have a Star Wars game where I can relive the battles I saw in the movies as well as some I didn't see but imagined all lied within the mod tools. Now I didn't take the time to really get to learn them, I don't possess the technical knowledge that some of these other guys do, I can even say I am lazy to an extent. Truthfully, this game is an idea ripped from BF 1942. Everyone can say otherwise, but the fact of the matter is that it's true. LA is trying to capitalize off the success of that very game and it's genre. Now I have played that game as well as the Star Wars mod for it and for the most part it was a solid effort. Then I bought this game thinking I would at least get the same experience as I had when I bought BF 1942. Needless to say I was left a little cold. I spent 50 dollars of my hard earned money and the game did not live up to expectations, it was good but needed more development time. I suspect office politics and overzealous marketing department decisions led LA to release the game to coincide with the DVDs. An initially good business decision, but one that would inevitably doom the game's longevity. A lot of content was removed, the maps were quite small, multiplayer was capped at 20 fps, not good for any PC gamer at all. In the end I figured they coded it according to the specs from the PS2 which is the bottleneck. After about 2 weeks I was not playing. I couldn't return the game as the stores do not accept returns on PC games. So i was pretty much stuck with it. I was really hoping that tools would be announced so that I could once again return to this game that had so much potential yet needed just that right push to get it over the top. The tools did that. I ended up not learning them but I've seen amazing stuff from the people who did. The game is still going strong after almost a year now, and it's because of the dedication that these talented modders have for putting out quality stuff. That's not to knock any of the devs as I'm sure you all worked very hard on this game and given the time, you could have given us even better if it had been delayed.
Now we have BF2 coming up and the game looks quite good from what I've seen. But now that tools are in doubt, I have to wonder how long anyone will really play it and appreciate it. Sure initial sales will be through the roof. I think that's what LA is going for. The consoles will see great success and all that. But I think PC gamers are the definitive community. They tell it like it is and are able to get more feedback to developers than anyone else. Console gamers get what they get and that's it. Will BF2 have the same longevity as its predecessor? Hard to say. If the game is being rushed in order to meet its Nov 1 release date to coincide with ROTS, gamers will know it. I think that if tools were released, even if they are difficult to learn, you would have the same community, if not more. I think the community is integral to any popular game being released today and I think companies are starting to realize that communities are good for business.
