Tentacles on weapons?

I was looking at Challenger's triplesaber thread, and I all of a sudden hatched an evil plot, involving a lightsaber hilt. would it be possible to create a tentacle on a lightsaber hilt? Also, if you can, would it be possible to make the hp_fire move with said tentacle?

I think it's possible to add tentacles to weapons. I remember Mandrek trying a light whip
As for hp_fire moving, I highly doubt it. Possibly with animations, but I don't know much about them so I can't say

Hey everyone.. I'm Actiroan, MandeRek's friend. MandeRek thought me a lot through e-mails; he had a website, through that i got notice of his e-mail, and we started mailing..

I remember MandeRek giving me the plan of a saber. He said he looked into it, but a animated tentacle is not possible for a weapon, since the odf lines are not supported in a weapon-class odf. What is possible, is for the unit.. Make the hilt (or just hp_active) child of a tentacle, which is in his hand (the main moving part of the weapon) Then some collision on the arms, chest and head, and a small weapon mesh, or just invisible, and you'ld have a real 'vibre-cord'. I remember the convo pack using one which were just new anims: this is loads of more work, though the tentacle way might need new anims too, since you will probably slash yourself :) Btw, is MandeRek still around here?

ah that was how he wanted to do a fibrecord
a cool idea, but i think the rotating etc. of the saber wont be able to move like with custom anims

Well, Mande asked me to finish his Rae series, together with foolis.. I might try some things, and see if what works out best.. New anims would mean you can be sure of how it moves.. i think a tentacle would be more natural.. But I'll try some things on the new Rae hero :yes:

If you wanted an hp_fire to move with the tentacles couldn't you just merge the two in XSI?

how would you merge nulls?
if you use meshes as hardpoints: how should battlefront recognize that the merged object consits of a hardpoint and a tentacle?

Merging should not be possible, or useless. Plus, tentacles can't be made of meshes, only nulls :)

Just put the mesh under the last tentacle bone, no problem at all! As long as you don't mess up the original tentacle hierarchy..
